ELECTROSTATICS

1. Three equal point charges of 2C are in free space at (0,0,0), (2,0,0) and
(0,2,0) respectively. Find net force on Q = 5C at (2,2,0).

2. Three parallel line charges, ρL1 = 5nC/m, ρL2 = 4nC/m and ρL3 = -6nC/m are
located at (0,0), (3,0) and (0,4) m respectively. Find D and E at (3,4).

3. A spherical charge distribution is given by

4. In a spherical region, the electric displacement is given by D = 10r2ar mC/m2.

5. A square plate in the x-y plane is situated in the space defined by – 3m ≤ x ≤


3m and - 3m ≤ y ≤ 3m. Find the total charge on the plate if the surface charge
density is given by ρs = = 4y2 μC/m2.

6. A spherical shell centered at the origin extends between R = 2cm and R =


3cm. If the volume charge density is given by ρv = 3R x 10-4 C/m3, find the
total charge contained in the shell.

7. Two point charges with Q1 = 2 x 10-5 C and Q2 = -4 x10-5 C are located in free
space at (1, 3, -1) and (-3, 1, -2), respectively, in a Cartesian coordinate
system. Find (a) the electric field E at (3, 1, -2) and (b) the force on a 8 x 10-5
C charge located at that point. All distances are in meters.

8. Line x = 3, z = -1 carries charge 20 nC/m while plane x = -2 carries charge 4


nC/m2. Find the force on a point charge –5 mC located at the origin.

9. Three point charges Q1 = 1 mC, Q2 = -2 mC, and Q3 = 3 mC are,


respectively, located at (0, 0,4), (-2, 5, 1) and (3, -4, 6).
(a) Find the potential VP at P(-1, 1, 2).
(b) Calculate the potential difference VPQ if Q is at (1, 2, 3).

10. Given that D = (2y2 + z)ax + 4xyay + xaz C/m2, find:

i). the volume charge density at (-1,0,3)


ii) the flux through the cube defined by 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, 0 ≤ y ≤ 1 and 0 ≤ z ≤ 1
iii) the total charge enclosed.

respectively. Determine the potential at P(1,1,0) due to the point charges.

13. There exists a potential of V = -2.5V on a conductor at r = 0.02 m and V = 15


V at r = 0.35 m. A dielectric material whose Єr = 3.0 exists between the
conductors. Determine the surface charge densities on the conductors.

14. The region y < 0 contains a dielectric material for which Єr1 = 2.0 and the
region y > 0 contains a dielectric material for which Єr2 = 4.0. If E1 = -3.0ax +
5.0ay + 7.0az V/m, find the electric field, E2 and D2 in medium 2.

15. In a certain region, J  3r 2 cos a r  r 2 sin a θ A/m, find the current crossing
the surface defined by   30 0 , 0    2 , 0  r  2 m.

16. A composite conductor 10 m long consists of an inner core of steel of radius


1.5 cm and outer sheath of copper whose thickness is 0.5 cm.
a). Determine the resistance of the conductor
b). If the total current in the conductor is 60 A, what current flows in each
metal?
c). Find the resistance of a solid copper conductor of the same length and
outer radius as the sheath.
Take the resistivities of copper and steel as 1.77  10-8 and 11.8  10-8 m.

17. What are the magnitudes of electric flux densities and polarization for a
dielectric material in which E = 150 kV/m? Electric susceptibility of the
dielectric material is 4.75.

18. A parallel plate capacitor has conducting plates of area equal to 0.04 m 2. The
plates are separated by a dielectric material whose Єr = 2 with the plate
separation of 1cm. Find: a) its capacitance value, b) the charge on the plates
when potential difference of 10 V is applied, c) the energy stored.
