CMT-LR Exercise #3

The document describes an experiment to determine the specific gravity of fine aggregates. Specific gravity is defined as the ratio of the weight of an aggregate to an equal volume of water. It provides a measure of the strength and quality of aggregate materials. The experiment involves weighing a pycnometer empty and filled with aggregate, then weighing it again filled with water to displace the aggregate. The specific gravity is then calculated using the measured weights. The results and calculation of specific gravity for the sample are not included.

I. Objective

 Specific Gravity is defined as the ratio of Weight of Aggregate to the Weight of equal Volume of
water.
 The specific gravity of an aggregate is considered to be a measure of strength or quality of the
material.
 Aggregates having low specific gravity are generally weaker than those with high specific
gravity.
II. Theory:
The specific gravity of an aggregate is defined as the ratio of the mass of a given volume of
sample to the mass of an equal volume of water at the same temperature.

The specific gravity is generally required for calculations in connections with concrete mix
design, for determination of moisture content and for the calculations of volume yield concrete.
The specific gravity also gives information on the quality and properties of aggregates. If the
specific gravity is above or below that normally assigned to a particular type of aggregate, it may
indicate that shape and grading of aggregate has altered.
III. Apparatus

 Fine aggregate
 Pycnometer
 Distilled water
 Tray
 Weighing balance
IV. Procedure

 Take a sample and place it in the Pycnometer.

 Pour distilled water into it until it is full.
 Eliminate the entrapped air by rotating the Pycnometer on its side, the hole in the apex of
the cone being covered with a finger.
 Wipe out the outer surface of Pycnometer and weigh it.
 Transfer the contents of the Pycnometer into a tray, care being taken to ensure that all the
aggregate is transferred.
 Refill the Pycnometer with distilled water to the same level and record the weight.
 Calculate Specific Gravity with the formula
V. Results
Specific gravity = (W2 – W1) / (W4 – W1) – (W3 – W2)

VI. Discussion of Results

No. Description Sample

1. Weight of empty pycnometer
(W1)grams
2. Weight of pycnometer + sample
(W2)grams
3. Weight of pycnometer + sample 960.69
+ water (W3)grams
4. Weight of pycnometer + water
(W4)grams
5. Specific gravity = (W2
-W1)/(W4 -W1)-(W3 – W2)
