Modified Proctor Test: Laboratory #4

This document describes procedures for conducting a modified Proctor test to determine the maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content of a soil sample according to ASTM D1557. The test involves compacting moist soil in 5 layers in a cylindrical mold using a 10 lb rammer dropped from 18 inches. The mass and moisture content of each compacted sample is measured and recorded. A graph of dry unit weight versus moisture content is plotted, from which the maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content are determined. The laboratory report should include a completed data sheet, calculations, and graphs showing the test results.

Laboratory #4
MODIFIED PROCTOR TEST
Scope
This procedure covers the determination of the maximum dry unit weight of compaction and the optimum moisture
content according to ASTM D1557-91. The soil is compacted in a cylindrical mold in five (5) layers with a rammer of
10lbs (4.5 kg) with a fall of 18 inches (45 cm). The obtained maximum dry unit weight is used to specify the field
compaction requirement.

Materials and Apparatus

Tools and Equipment Materials
General Per Group Consumables
• weighing scale • 1 x cylindrical brass mold • 4 kilograms air-dried soil
• rammer • 1 x base plate • Distilled water
• oven • 1 x cylindrical brass collar
• graduated cylinder • 6 x moisture cans
• 19.0mm sieve, or finer • 1 x rectangular tray
• 1 x trowel
• 1 x straightedge

Modified Proctor Test Procedure:

1. Weigh the empty mold attached to the base plate, without the collar (the extension)
𝑀4 = 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑡𝑦 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑑 𝑠𝑒𝑡, grams
2. In a tray, take about 4 kg of soil passing the 19.0mm sieve and mix it with water.
Recommended: Trial 1 mass of water = 350 mL, add another 200mL every trial performed.
3. On a solid surface, attach the collar on top of the mold.
4. Fill the mold with moist soil in five (5) layers. Take note of the following:
a. Each layer should have a thickness a little greater than 1/5 of the mold height for compaction allowance.
b. Using the rammer, compact each layer with 56 blows of the following sequence:
➢ Hold the rammer straight and perpendicular to the top of the soil, letting the rammer’s open end touch the
top of the soil without applying pressure to the soil.
➢ Lift the handle to its maximum length.
➢ Drop the handle, letting the weight fall freely inside the rammer.
c. Take care to distribute the blows uniformly over the surface of each layer.
d. After five layers, the surface of the soil should be above the mold and should be somewhere in the collar.
5. Remove the collar and strike off the projected part of the compacted soil using the straightedge, and weigh.
𝑀5 = 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑑 𝑠𝑒𝑡 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑚𝑜𝑖𝑠𝑡 𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑙, grams
6. Remove the base plate from the mold and take two samples of the soil: one from the top surface, and one from the
bottom surface. Use the two samples for moisture content determination per trial.
7. Repeat the procedure from step 2 to perform at least three (3) trials, until the trial achieves diminishing results.

Laboratory Plate
Your plate should include the following:
• Completed Data Sheet
• Calculations and Graphs:
➢ Dry Unit Weight vs Moisture Content Graph
➢ Show maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content
➢ Plot the zero-air-void unit weight curve
