Tips for scoring high marks in Prelims
1. Already knowing the answer- It’s the best for extremely factual questions. e.g.
questions on government schemes/events or recently launched satellite or space probe,
international organizations etc.
If you have studied about gharials, you will know that they are found in fresh water/riverine systems, especially
in North Part of India; Bhitarkarnika Mangroves is a salty water ecosystem. Pulicat Lake is brackish, whereas
Deepor Beel in Assam is fresh water wetland, but is known for fish and migratory birds. So, you can arrive at the
answer- Chambal River (fresh water river found in North India).
3. Educated Guess- From your pre-existing knowledge base, start eliminating options. Look
for outliers-options that seem distant to the answer. The probability of getting the answer
right increases.
Q. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
Viruses can infect
1. bacteria
2. fungi
3. plants
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
(a) 1 and 2 only
(b) 3 only
(c) 1 and 3 only
(d) 1, 2 and 3
By reading NCERTs and educated guess, this answer can be solved. Since viruses infect majority of the living
organisms on Earth including bacteria, it can be guessed that they can infect all bacteria, fungi and plants.
4 Avoid extremes- Sometimes in questions you will find statements that contain words like “never” “only” etc.
In many instances, those statements are incorrect.
Statements that show some moderation by using words like “may”, “may not”, “possible” , “could” etc. have a
higher chance of being true.

Developing Answer Writing Skills For Sci-tech Questions asked
in GS- Paper III
1. As UPSC itself states- Content of the answer is more important than its length.
Therefore, content of your answer is the king!
For the content of the answer, it is necessary to know about the contemporary issues
related to Science and Tech, any important indigenous technology or achievement by
Indian Organisation, issues related to public health, medical technology etc.
2. Reading newspapers and Journals is really necessary for writing answers for Science
and technology.
● The newspapers, esp. the Hindu publishes news about science and technology,
environment and agriculture/ agricultural innovations or contemporary issues. The
science articles provide useful material for writing answer.
● The articles contain important concepts or keywords.
● More information can be recollected by searching more about the concept or
keyword.
3. Developing answer writing skills- Logical structure of an answer
4. Use sub-headings to organize your answer. An organized answer will look neat and
help the examiner to know the points you have covered in the answer.
5. Covering maximum points in an answer i.e approaching the answer in a holistic
manner
Science and Tech answers do not need a thesis to be presented, in fact in a concise
manner you need to cover most of the dimensions related to the topic in question. If
each dimension of the topic is covered under sub-headings and follows the logical
structure, no one can stop you from scoring well!
6. Use of flowchart and diagrams
Diagrams and figures are an important part of the science subject, hence Science and
Tech or Environment concepts can be very well explained by diagrams or flowcharts.
With flowcharts and diagrams, you use less words but maximum expression to get the
message across.
Comparisons or differences can be presented in a tabular form.
7. Taking as many tests for Mains for the Sci-Tech subject as possible
Answers related to variety of topics in Sci-Tech or Environment can be prepared by
taking descriptive tests. This improves speed writing as well.
