JUDGE’S CORNER NUMBER 21

JUDGE’S CORNER
Number 21
Experience has shown that archers are too frequently not aware of some of the Rules and Regulations
that govern formal archery. In an attempt to address some of these gaps this column will be used to
advise, explain and update a selection of the Rules and Regulations on a regular basis.

Archers who have specific questions are invited to submit their questions to the Editor for transmission to
the Judge Committee. Answers will be published in the Bulletin.

K T van Warmelo (SANAA Judge Committee)

Why do we need guy ropes on target stands?

There are two important reasons:

1) It is a World Archery rule that stands have to be securely anchored and supported.
2) Experience has shown that it is necessary for the stands to be either permanently built into
rigid and solid supports or that they be securely anchored to prevent any movement or
displacement while in use.
If stands fall over during a distance change there will be no arrows in the target face and, usually,
the only damage caused by the fall will be on the butt itself. However, there have been too many
instances in the past, even at some international events, that tournaments were held using stands
that had not been secured. And inevitably stands with arrows in them have blown over during such
competitions to the great consternation of the owners of the arrows and, of course, the organizers.
Arrows do not like being flattened by heavy butts and break, a circumstance that will lead to great
unhappiness overall. The cost of replacing sets of arrows can become quite significant.

One aspect of using guy ropes that can easily be overlooked is that of the texture and depth of the
soil on which the stand is placed. Loose sandy soil or a very shallow layer of soil are clearly not
suitable and yet I have seen at least one tournament field laid out on a thin layer of soil spread over
the concrete of a parking area. The layout looked really good but the pegs that were supposed to
secure the butts had nothing of substance to secure them. The soil layer was not deep enough with
predictable and inevitable consequences.

What is frequently overlooked is that the large surface area of the butt is not at ground level but is
raised above the ground. Any force applied to the back of the butt will, therefore, tend to move it
forward. If this is done deliberately during a distance change the stand will be held and prevented
from tipping over. However, if the pressure is caused by wind the stand will not move easily on grass so
that the butt is much more likely to tip forward with the wheels as the pivot, especially as the surface
area of the butt will be a distance above the ground.

Lifting and holding the back supports of a stand during a move is not an action requiring much physical
strength and, going by past experience, is assumed to be under 10kg.

So what does this mean? The butts commonly used locally are usually ±1.4 x 1.4 metres in size giving a
total surface area of 1.96 square metres or 21.1square feet. As shown in the table below a wind
blowing at 16 kilometres per hour (kph) will exert a force of 2.45 kilograms on the back of a butt which
is close to the effort needed to lift the back supports. This could render the stand vulnerable to being

14
The S A Archer – June 2022
made unstable. Any increase in wind speed will exert a force greater than the downward force of the
back supports and could push an unsecured butt/stand over.

Mph kph force m/sec force

30 mph 48 kph 48,60850176 lb 13,33 22,094774 kg

25 mph 40 kph 33,755904 lb 11,11 15,343593 kg

20 mph 32 kph 21,60377856 lb 8,88 9,8198993 kg

10 mph 16 kph 5,40094464 lb 4,44 2,4549748 kg

The requirement that butts be firmly secured is, as illustrated above, fully justifiable and it is
important for judges, and competition organizers, to be not only aware of it but actually to verify
that it is fully met.

23
The S A Archer – June 2022
ON THE LINE WITH: Neve Quail
Of all the sporting options open to school going athletes, what was the
reason you took up archery?
At the time I was introduced to Archery, I played hockey, softball and was in
the swim team. The first time I tried archery was at a Scouts team building
evening and really enjoyed it. My parents booked me into a 4-week
introductory/beginners’ course and I have loved it ever since. I enjoy the
challenge of competing and always working to better my skills. Archery has
taught me discipline, hard work and always pushing myself.

What school do you go to, and how do they feel about you doing archery.
Both the teachers and your fellow learners.
Durban Girls high School. It is not a school sport, but they are very supportive
and have acknowledged my achievements giving me junior colours. My friends
are proud of my achievements. One of my friends is also an archer, but she
shoots compound.

Have you been able to convince anyone from your school to join you doing archery?
No, not yet. People seem to think that archery is very expensive and difficult.

How long have you been doing archery?

I started archery in 2019, but because of COVID I have
not been able to compete as much as what I wanted to.

Tell us a little about why you choose the type of bow

that you currently shoot.
I do recurve, I think it is more challenging and gives me
more opportunities to reach my goals of shooting at
the Olympics one day.

Is there a tournament that stands out for you as really good experience? And is there a range that you
particularly enjoy?
Currently 2022 Outdoor nationals, it was the first
competition where I travelled outside of Durban for. It
was also the competition where I feel I learned the
most from, I learned how to stay calm during a big
competition, not get distracted by bad weather and it
was a special way to finish off my season.

My favourite outdoor range is Kings Park. It’s where I

do most of my competitions and practice. Everybody is
friendly and very supportive.

With all the pressures of school, how often are you able to get out to practice and train with your
coach?
Usually twice a week and up to 3 times leading up to a big competition like nationals. With my coach
maybe once a week.

24
The S A Archer – June 2022
From various records updates, it seems that you have been doing rather well score wise at archery. Tell
us about some of those and is there a record that stands out for you?
My outdoor records are both SA and African records:
Half round - 320
Full round (720) - 633
Double round (1440) – 1240
Quattro – 2406
All the records are special, because it took hard work to get
them. The 633 stands out for me, because it is my highest
600 score.

What are some of the goals that you are looking to in

archery?
Attending the 2023 Junior world champs, and one day on
the Olympics

Is there an archer (local or international) that you look to

as a good role model?
Ki Bo Bae

How do you relax when not on the archery range?

I love art so I like to draw. Spending time with my family
and friends and playing Minecraft on my computer.

Hopes, special mentions.

Zaid Kajee- for the great foundation and starting me on my journey
Rhyn Potgieter- for helping and supporting me with my outdoor archery
Shane Hill (from Zimbabwe)- for all the help with equipment and coaching
Deyaa Sallam (Egyptian Coach)- for the form tuning and mental toughness
Lastly my dad you always fixing my arrows and running me around
