IV. Discussion

Gender and Sexuality as a Social Reality: The term "sex and gender" are concepts used to
make a distinction between the biologically different "male and female" and between the
socially different "man and woman." Since biological sex categorizes a person based on the
visible genitalia they possess at birth, most people are classified as female or male, and some
are classified as intersex. Gender then is perceived as how society creates patterns, of
understandings regarding femininity and masculinity" (Shaw & Lee, 2012, p.105).

Psychosocial Perspective: Sex, gender,
Philippines,and
3100 gender identity are not fixed into the two
categories of female or male, feminine or masculine. Instead, they are continuums of
biological and cultural makeup. This includes Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and
Gender Expression.

Political Legal Perspective and Cross-Cutting Issues: The SOGIE bill was first filed by
Miriam Defensor Santiago and former Akbayan representative Loretta Rosales in
2000. The SOGIE Equality Bill proposes equal access for members of the LGBTQ+
community to fundamental rights and services that everyone also has. Some of the
discriminatory acts it prohibits include: using SOGIE as criteria for hiring, demotion, or
dismissal of workers; denying access to health services, public establishments, and public
facilities; and using a person's SOGIE to deny admission or push expulsion in an educational
institution and deny the application to government licenses, permits, and similar documents.

V. Summary and Conclusion

Sex is biological, while gender refers to social roles, behaviors, capacities attributed by
culture to men or women. Gender has implications for equality between women and men
in society. In reality, gender limits the potential of both men and women. Gender is a
cultural construction- a product of a given society’s adaptation to the material condition in
which it finds itself.
Sex and gender issues are intersectional and go beyond social inequalities and unfair
treatment within the family, workplace, and media representation.
