Illustrate an antiderivative of a function (STEM_BC11I-Iva‘). LET'S KICK IT OFF! Match the functions in Column A with their corresponding derivatives in Column B. Column A Column B 2x2 +x SQ) = 4x3 + 3x? ints F(x) = 9x7 +3 xt 43x 41 xttx +2 = 3x? 43x41 f@) f(x) PReN> ARE YOU TAKING IT? 1. How do we find the derivative of a given function? 2. What is the relation of the functions in Column B with respect to the functions in Column A? 3. What is the relation of the functions in Column A with respect to the functions in Column B? HERE’S HOW IT IS! In the previous discussions, we learned how to find the derivatives of different functions. Now, we will introduce the inverse of differentiation. We shall call this process antidifferentiation. A natural question then arises: Definition. A function F is an antiderivative of the function f on an interval | if F'(x) = f(x) for all values of x in 1 Theorem 1.1. If a function F is any antiderivative of the function on an interval /, then. every antiderivative of f on the interval / is of the form: F(x) + C, where C is arbitrary constant. Antidifferentiation is the process of finding the antiderivative of a given function. The symbol *f “is the integral sign that denotes the operation of antidifferentiation and the function f is called the integrand. If Fis an antiderivative of f, we write frear=roa+e The expression (x) + C is calied the general antiderivative of f. The constant C is called the constant of integration. EXAMPLE 1: (a) An antiderivative of f(x) = 12x? + 2x is F(x) = 4x? + x?, As we can see, the derivative of F is given by F'(x) = 12x? + 2x = f(x), (b) An antiderivative of g(x) = cos x is G(x) = sinx because G'(x) = cosx = g(x). ”*The antiderivative F of a function f is not unique. EXAMPLE 2: (a) Other antiderivatives of f(x) = 12x? + 2x are Fy(x) = 4x3 + x? — Land F(x) = 4x? 4.x? +1. In fact, any function of the form F(x) = 4x? +x? +C, where C € Ris an antiderivative of f(x). Observe that F'(x) = 12x? + 2x + 0 = 12x? + 2x = f(a). (b) Other antiderivatives of g(x) = cosx are G,(x) = sinx + r and G(x) = sinx — 1. In fact, any function G(x) = sinx + C, where C € Ris an antiderivative of g(x). EXAMPLE 3: Verify that [(2x + 4)dx =x? +4x+C Solution: Let F(x) =x? + 4x +C and f(x) = 2x +4. Since F'(x) = 2x +4, which is equal to f(x), therefore, [(2x + 4)dx PA tC. EXAMPLE 4: Verity that [(x? + 3x? + 2x — 1)dx = 3x? + 6x +2 Solution: Let F(x) = 3x? + 6x + 2 and f(x) = x3 + 3x? + 2x -1. Since F'(x) = x? + 3x? + 2x + C, which is equal to f(x), therefore, [oe +30? 42x— dr = 30? + 6n42 NOW DO IT! Determine the general antiderivatives of the following functions: 4. f(x) = 20x* — 4x3 + 15x? - 14x -9 2. f(x) = 7x3 - 11x? -2x+8 3. f@)=x%-2? x ACE IT! Match the functions in Column A with their corresponding antiderivatives in Column B. Column & Column B 1 xs + 3x? a. F(x) 2. f@) = 3x2 +3 b. F(x) 3. f(x) =3x? + 6x41 C. F(x) = 2x4 — 3x9 4+1 4. 6x? — 4x41 d. F(x) 5. x3 — 9x? e. F(x) References Arceo, Carlene Perpetua P., Richard S. Lemence, Oreste Jr. M. Ortega, and Louie John D. iman, Vallejo. 2016.
