The students are expected to:
a. illustrate the problem in a probability distribution table,
b. find the probability of each random variable; and
c. find the expected value, variance and standard deviation of the random variable.

ACTIVITY PROPER:

GROUP 1. WEEKLY ALLOWANCE

A group of SHS students was tasked to study on the number of times a students will ask for additional
allowance after receiving his weekly allowance. The group randomly selected 50 SHS students from different strands
and asked how many times they have asked for additional allowance after receiving their weekly allowance. Three
students asked for additional allowance zero times, 15 students asked for additional allowance once, 24 students asked
for additional allowance two times, 6 students asked for additional allowance three times, and 2 students asked for
additional allowance four times. Find the expected value or mean of the number of times a students will ask for
additional allowance after receiving his weekly allowance. Calculate the variance and standard deviation of the
variable as well. Interpret the result.

GROUP 2. RAFFLE TICKET

The officer of the math club of a Tomas Avila Andaya Sr. National High School are planning to sell 160
tickets to be raffled during the Foundation Day. One ticket will win P3,000.00. The other tickets will nothing. If you
are a students of the school and you will buy one ticket, what will be the expected value, variance and standard
deviation of your gain? Interpret the result.

GROUP 3. TATTOO
A small study aims to see the correlation between having a tattoo and cases of clinical depression. In one
group of 12 people from the same age bracket, 7 have 1 tattoo, 3 have 2 tattoos, and the rest have 3 tattoos. If a person
is randomly picked from this group and evaluated for depression, what is the expected number of tattoos that the
person will have? Find the variance and standard deviation. Interpret the result.

GROUP 4. ABSENCES
Based on the records of absences, the probabilities that John incurred 3, 4, 5 or 6 absences are 25%, 30%,
30%, and 15% respectively. Construct a probability distribution, then find the mean, variance, and standard deviation.
Interpret the result.

GROUP 5. NOTEBOOKS.
The numbers of notebooks sold per day at the school canteen are 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4. Their probabilities are 0.4,
0.2, 0.2, 0.1, and 0.1, respectively. What are the variance and standard deviation of the probability distribution?
Interpret the result.

Answer the given question:

1. How do you get the mean?
2. How do we get the variance?
3. How do we get the standard deviation?
4. How do you describe the spread or dispersion in a probability distribution?
