8 Communication Models

The document discusses 8 major models of communication that can be divided into 3 categories: Linear, Interactive, and Transactional. The Linear models focus on one-way communication and include Aristotle's model, Laswell's model, and the Shannon-Weaver model. The Interactive models examine two-way communication using models like the Osgood-Schramm model and the Westley and Maclean model. The Transactional models focus on two-way communication where the message develops in complexity, which includes Barnlund's transactional model and Dance's helical model.

8 COMMUNICATION MODELS
Communication models give us a clear impression of the various components of a
communication scenario. We can make better decisions and communicate more
effectively by adopting these communication models.
There are 8 major models of communication that can be divided into 3 categories:
Linear, Interactive and Transactional.
 Linear models – is a One-way communication since it does not focus on the
feedback. The main elements in these models are: The channel, sender, and
receiver.
The three most popular linear communication models are:

1. Aristotle’s model of communication

- This is the oldest communication model that dates back to 300 BC.
- The speaker and speech are the main subjects of Aristotle's model.
Delivering a presentation to the audience is the speaker's responsibility.
2. Laswell’s model of communication
- In this model, the five fundamental questions: "Who," "Says what," "In
What Channel," "To Whom," and "With What Effect" are used to assess
communication. The most crucial elements of the effective
communication are addressed by these concerns.
3. The Shannon-Weaver model of communication
- A source, encoder, medium, decoder, receiver, and noise are some of
the fundamental components of the Shannon-weaver model of
communication. It explains the process by which information is
transferred from a sender to a receiver.
- This model is also known as the “Telephone model” and the first model to
introduce the role of noise.
4. Berlo’s S-M-C-R model of communication
- David Berlo created the SMCR model of communication, which has four
parts: the sender, message, channel, and receiver. According to this
theory, communication refers to the exchange of information.
- In order for effective communication to take place, this model suggested
that the sender and the receiver should be in the same level.

 Interactive models – this category examine two-way communication using

interactive models. Interactive models emphasized the role of feedback in a
communication. There are two models of communication that is in this category:

5. The Osgood-Schramm model of communication

- According to its model that signals can travel in two directions, that is why
Osgood-Schramm's model of communication is known as a circular
model. A person can therefore encode a message and send one back to
the sender after they have decoded it.
- Both parties (sender & receiver) are given equal engagement with each
other.
6. The Westley and Maclean model of communication
- Westley and Maclean came to the realization that a person's choice
response to his or her physical environment is the beginning of
communication rather than when one person starts to talk. The
communication process and environmental responses are highly linked,
according to this model.

 Transactional models — it focuses on two-way communication in which the

message develops in complexity throughout the course of the communication
event. These category is consist of:

7. Barnlund’s transactional model of communication

- According to Barnlund's proposed transactional model of communication,
sending and receiving messages are mutually beneficial. This implies that
the effect and effectiveness of the communication are the responsibility of
both communicators.
- In this model of communication, the sender and the receiver’s reactions
will depend on their background beliefs and their culture.

8. Dance’s helical model

- Frank Dance is the writer of The Helical Model of Communication. He
emphasized the importance of interruptions and issues in communication.
- In this communication model, similar to the concept of the person's birth
to the present, communication is portrayed in the model as a spiral
process.
