Abstract

B
eaconhouse National University is one of Pakistan’s finest liberal arts institutes with eight
schools and a faculty of renowned artists, designers and journalists, seasoned curators,
international development experts, authors with published research and established
practices, cutting across geo-cultural boundaries, and in sync with globally prevailing ideas and
narratives. The students who are impacted by the university are highly talented, skilled and
innovative in their own fields. Together the faculty and students have various accolades, nationally
and internationally. They are who make the university what it is.

Despite having eight different schools and a range of clubs and societies associated with them, the
diverse student body of BNU does not strongly portray the kind of united team spirit that
universities often do.

Many studies suggest that by wearing university merch, students will show that they are properly
proud of their institute, their school within the institute and the community. This will help to
support the team spirit and friendship between classmates and teachers. By choosing a certain day
of the week or a specific period when the merch will be worn increases engagement and teamwork
especially at sports events. The design and print of the university merch/collection expresses its
spirit. Whether it is a simple display of the university logo or something smart and innovative, the
merch is great tool to raise awareness about your school/university. It is free PR! Merch or
souvenirs can also become an ideal farewell gift for graduates. Printed designs can express
unforgettable memories of school and university years and friendships and wearing it can become
a tradition during regular class meetings or reunions over the years. University merch with original
printing or embroidery can become a popular feature of university days not only among students,
but also faculty or supporters of the school. It can also serve as a gift in school competitions and
other voluntary activities. University souvenir shops and merch collection can express the values
of the institute not only by its style and branding, but also by the choice of sustainable textile. You
can show that the university and its students care about the environment and fairness to the people
who made the textile for you.

The top ranked universities in the world such as Harvard, Stanford, University of Cambridge etc
all have their own merch shops by their own name and collaborate with huge international brands
such as Nike. Without a doubt most of their students and admirers of the institute proudly own
their souvenirs and wear their merchandise. This is a sign of a positive image the institutes and a
reflection of their huge success. Amongst competitors of BNU and other renowned schools in the
country such as LUMS, NUST, GC University, Aitchison College etc, BNU is the one which does
not yet have a souvenir or merch shop. The introduction of an aesthetically pleasing, on-campus
“The BNU Shop” will have many more benefits to the university, students and the community
than the ones mentioned above.
For starters, the products will not only be the traditional mugs and pens with the university logo,
but a more diverse range of products that would be either useful, commemorative or luxury items.
These products will be locally sourced and the designs would be acquired innovatively. For
example, eco-friendly hemp and jute bags could have the works of the art students or even
promotional material for upcoming university events such as “Bestival” and “BNUMUN”. Future
collaborations can be done with existing textile and fashion designing students, local clothing
stores etc. As part of a PR campaign funds can be raised for institutes such as “The Rising Sun”
or the SOS village by having the children’s artwork printed on merch and sold at the BNU shop.
Nearing the convocation dates items can be sold to graduating students for sale and stalls can be
set up near the ceremony areas for parents and students to buy merch as gifts including “special
convocation items”. A website can be set up for the shop and regular social media marketing about
new products, sales and collaborations would help engage the students who are the main target
audience.
