Double Page Spread Analysis

Main image
Conventionally the main image takes up at least one of the two pages on a double page
spread. If it is just one page, it may bleed across the centrefold. The main image may use a
direct address to engage the audience and the mise en scene will be visually interesting and
signify the context of the article.

In this issue of Four Four Two the main image is positioned on the right page; the picture is
of Manchester City's latest signing, Erling Haaland. The image is a close up on Haaland’s
face with a bit of the Manchester city shirt in the shot at the bottom of the page. There is
nothing in the background of the image so that the reader's attention is on Haaland’s face.
conventionally the image bleeds across the centre of the two pages. The main colours used
are blue, black and white. This has been done as those colours are the colours used in the
Manchester City logo and their football kit as well as their merchandise. In addition the
Manchester city logo has been used on the main image therefore the readers instantly know
that the article will be about Manchester City and the article would appeal more to the
manchester city fanbase.

Headline
A headline is conventionally the largest text on the page and indicates the purpose of the
article. It can often be a pull quote to grab the audience's attention and will often anchor the
meaning of the main image.

In this issue of Four Four Two the headline is in the centre of the page and is the largest text
on the page. It is noticeable that the colours used match the colours of the football kit and
are also the colours that are linked with Manchester City football club. The font used is big
and bold and stands out from the other things on the page. The headline says “the first
galactico”. The use of the word galactico emphases how important Haaland will be at the
club as being called a galactio is an honour that my few have. This will make the article more
appealing to the fans as the word galactico is not a word that is used very often so therefore
the word carries power with it so by using it in the headline gives the article power and is
likely to be more interesting as a result. also it signifies the importance of the article by using
the word so therefore more people are going to want to read the article so they can find out
more.

By line
The by line credits the writer or photographer of the article and it is usually positioned near
the headline of the article.

In this issue of Four Four Two the by line gives the credit to Leo Moynihan and Benjamin
McFadyean whio both produced the Haaland article for this issue of Four Four Two. The
inclusion of their names gives them the credit they deserve as it was their idea on how the
article was to be written. The by line is located in the centre of the left page just under the
headline. This is so that the reader's attention is not just on the by line but is instead on the
whole page. However the by line is still large enough to attract the attention of the reader
therefore giving credit to the producers of the article. This is why the byline is smaller than
the headline but larger than the main body text.
Drop cap
The first letter of a word in an article will be enlarged and are dropped down into the main
body of text; this indicates the beginning of the article.

In this issue of Four Four Two the drop cap is the largest letter on the page the font used is
big and bold and the colour is the well known Manchester City blue as this is the colour of
their kit. The letter is located in the top corner of the left page.

Main body text

The main body text that makes up an article is the smallest font on the page and is usually in
a plain and simple style.

In this issue of Four Four Two the main body text is located around the two pages. All of the
text is all about Haaland as the article is about him the text is placed within white boxes so
that it helps it stand out from the rest of the page. The main body texts help people in the
audience further understand who Haaland is and what he has done.

Secondary Image
Secondary images are any images that feature in the article this is in addition to the main
image. They provide more visual information to the reader and create appeal.

In this issue of Four Four Two the secondary image is located in the bottom corner on the
left page. The secondary image is significantly smaller than the main image. The secondary
image is a picture of the stage that Haaland is presented on whereas the main image is a
zoomed in picture of Haaland. It is important that the image is zoomed in as the audience
can see Haaland's facial expression which seems quite confident this could positively affect
the team and fans wich could lead to the team having a good season.

Page number and additional information

The page number and additional information is often located in the outer corners of the
page; it can also sometimes be located within the masthead.

In this issue of Four Four Two the page number and additional information is located at the
bottom of each page the additional information included the month the issue was released
which in this case the release date for this issue is September 2022. The page number and
additional information is in a small font with only the title of the magazine being in a bold font;
this is so that the page number and additional information does not distract the audience
from the real purpose of the page.

Column layout
The column layout is used to create structure and order to allow the audience to easily
understand and navigate around the page.

In this issue of Four Four Two Two the columns are mainly underneath the main image as
well as at the side of the image. This has been done as the producers of the article want to
put as much information in the article as possible so they will put information anywhere they
can. In some of the columns there are subheadings so that different parts of the articles are
separated as they include different information about the article so they have been
separated so that the article is easier to read and understand.

Pull quote
A pull quote from the article is repeated in a larger font to grab the audience's attention and
make them want to read the article. it is conventionally positioned in the middle of the
column of texts or on the main image.

In this issue of Four Four Two the pull quote is a bold font as it stands out. Also the pull
quote is in a blue box which helps it stand out further. The pull quote reads “It looks like a
match made in heaven- this is a striker who scores all sorts of goals and a city team who can
create from anywhere”. City fans would be delighted when reading this as the quote makes
haaland and city seem like they were made for eachother. Furthermore the use of the phrase
“a match made in heaven” makes Haaland seem like he was a gift from god but it also
emphasises the god like abilities that haaland has. In addition the quote has been pulled
directly from the text shows that the quote really stands out from the rest of the texts. The
colour of the background of the pull quote stands out as the blue and white used is also on
the kit so this will make the quote more appealing to city fans as it is their club colours. the
quote a match made in heaven can be seen as humorous as the match between Haaland
and Manchester city was not actually made in heaven; this is just an exaggeration to make
the article seem more appealing to the audience.

Standfirst
It is like an introduction to the article and is positioned under the headline. conventionally
smaller than the headline but larger than the main body of text

In this issue of Four Four Two the standfirst follows conventions as it is under the headline
and the by line. The standfirst is in a smaller font than the headline. This is so that the stand
first does not overshadow the headline as the standfirst is not meant to be the focus of
attention. The standfirst gives additional information that links to the article in this issue of
four four two the stand first says' ' Manchester City have had a great many players during
Pep Guardiola’s reign, but none have arrived with quite the same status of Erling Haaland.
His task? to help them finally win the champions league, as he explains to FFT” this stanfirst
would appeal the most to Manchester City fans as they wish for their team to be able to win
the champions league something they still have yet to do. This signifies the purpose of the
magazine which is to inform and entertain people about football as well as the football team
Manchester City. The article provides images on the topic that the article is covering to help
the readers understand what the article is about. The article uses simple terminology and
phrases so that the audience fully understands what the article is about as the audience is
likely to be in the middle and lower class which means that they may not fully understand the
meaning of complex words and phrases.

House Style
The house style of this magazine is simple but interesting. The colours used are vibrant and
easily recognizable as the colours of Manchester city football kit so therefore by using them
in the article makes it instantly appealing to Manchester City fans and football fans. The font
used is sans serif. This font has been used as it is simple but still stands out in the article.
Some of the words are different colours and those are the words that the producers want the
reader to focus on. The information of the article has been placed into columns so that the
information is easy to read and the page is easier to navigate. also the language used is
simple and not very complex so that the information is easy to read and understand.
