.

What’s New

Activity 1: QUICK CHECK

Check on your prior knowledge and what you want to learn about the control and
prevention of communicable diseases.

What I Know What I Want to Know What I usually Do

What is It

SELF-MONITORING SKILLS
• It is the process of observing one’s behavior and evaluating it in
relation to one’s goal.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
• It is an illness caused by infectious agent or its toxic products
that are transmitted directly or indirectly to a well person
through an agent, vector or inanimate object.
TYPES
INFECTIOUS DISEASE
• It is not easily transmitted by ordinary contact but requires a
direct inoculation through a break in the previously intact skin
or mucous membrane.
CONTAGIOUS DISEASE
• It is easily transmitted from one person to another through direct
or indirect means.

TERMINOLOGIES

• DISINFECTION – destruction of pathogenic microorganism

outside the body by directly applying physical or chemical
means.
o Concurrent – method of disinfection done immediately
after the infected individual discharges infectious
material/secretions. This method of disinfection is
appropriate when the patient is still the source of
infection.
o Terminal – applied when the patient is no longer the
source of infection.

• Disinfectant – chemical used on non-living objects.

• Antiseptic – chemical used on living things.
• Bactericidal – kills microorganism.
• Sterilization – complete destruction of all microorganism
• Quarantine – a state, period, or place of isolation in which
people or animals that have arrived from elsewhere or been
exposed to infectious or contagious disease are placed.
• Fumigation – the action or process of disinfecting or purifying
an area with the fumes of certain chemicals.
• Immunization – the action of making a person or animal
immune to infection, typically by inoculation.
8 Healthy Habits that Prevent Germs and Infectious Diseases from Spreading
1. Handle & Prepare Food Safely

• Food can carry germs. Wash hands, utensils, and surfaces often when
preparing any food, especially raw meat. Always wash fruits and
vegetables. Cook and keep foods at proper temperatures. Do not leave
food out.
• Refrigerate promptly.

2. Wash Hands Often

• One of the most important healthy habits to prevent the spread of
germs is to clean your hands. Our hands can carry germs, so it is
important to wash them often, even if they do not look dirty.

3. Clean and Disinfect Commonly Used Surfaces.

• Germs can live on the surfaces. Cleaning with soap and water is usually
enough. However, you should disinfect your bathroom and kitchen
regularly. Disinfect other areas if someone in the house is ill.

4. Cough and Sneeze into a Tissue or on your Sleeve.

• Cough or sneeze into a tissue or on your shirt sleeve not into your
hands to prevent germs to be passed onto other people, or contaminate
other objects that people touch.

5. Do not Share Personal Items

• Avoid sharing personal items that cannot be disinfected, like
toothbrushes and razors or sharing towels between washes. Needles
should never be shared, should only be used once, and then thrown
properly.

6. Get Vaccinated
• Vaccines can prevent many infectious diseases. You should get some
vaccinations in childhood, some as an adult, and some for special
situations like pregnancy and travel. Make sure you and your family
are up to date on your vaccinations.

7. Avoid Touching Wild Animals

• You and your family should avoid touching wild animals which can
carry germs that cause infectious diseases. If you are bitten, talk to
your doctor. Make sure that your pet’s vaccination is up to date.

8. Stay Home When Sick.

• When you are sick, stay home and rest. You will get well soon and will
not spread germs.
HEALTH MEASURES to PREVENT and CONTROL Communicable Diseases

• Maintain personal health and hygiene.

• Be considerate of the health of others.
• Avoid risk factors associated with communicable diseases.
• Have regular check-ups.
• Submit to early medical treatment.
• Avoid direct contact with people who have serious communicable diseases.
• Submit to immunizations against communicable disease.

Factors in Community Health Program and Policies

• Policies and programs for health target communities:

√ Mortality rate (length of life)
√ Morbidity (quality of life)
1. Health Behavior – refers to an action regarding their health and well- being.
• Alcohol use
• Diet and exercise
• Sexual activity
• Tobacco use
2. Clinical care – refers to having access to quality healthcare services.
• Access to care
• Quality of care
3. Social and economic factor
• One’s job type.
• Income level
• Educational attainment
• Social interaction

AGENCIES IN THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASE

World Health Organization (WHO)

• WHO works worldwide to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the
vulnerable.
• Their goal is to ensure that a billion more people have universal health
coverage, to protect a billion more people from health emergencies, and
provide a further billion people with better health and well-being.

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH (DOH)

The Department of Health (DOH) holds the over-all technical authority on health as
it is a national health policy maker and regulatory institution. Basically, the DOH
has three major roles in the health sector: (1) leadership in health; (2) enabler and
capacity builder; and (3) administrator of specific services. Its mandate is to
develop national plans, technical standards, and guidelines on health. Aside from
being the regulator of all health services and products, the DOH is the provider of
special tertiary health care services and technical assistance to health providers
and stakeholders.
Disease Prevention and Control Bureau (DCPB)

• Develops plans, policies, programs, projects and strategies for disease

prevention and control health protection.
• Provides coordination, technical assistance, capability building, consultancy
and advisory services related to disease prevention and control health
protection.

EPIDEMIOLOGY BUREAU

• Develops and evaluates surveillance systems and other health information

systems.
• Collects, analyzes and disseminates reliable and timely information on the
health status.
• Investigates disease outbreaks and other threats to public health.
• Network public health laboratories in support of epidemiological and
surveillance activities.

HEALTH EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT BUREAU

• Acts as the DOH Coordinating unit and Operation Center for all health
emergencies and disasters, as well as incidents with the potential of
becoming an emergency, and coordinate the mobilization and sharing of
resources.
• Provides the communication linkage among DOH Central Office and other
concerned agencies, including the hospitals and the regions, during
emergencies and disasters.
• Maintains updated information of all health emergencies and disasters
(except epidemiological investigation reports) and provide such information
to other offices and agencies in accordance with existing protocols.

What's More

Did you know?

There are three levels of preventive care:

Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Care.

Primary prevention aims to avoid the development of a disease or disability in

healthy individuals. Most population-based health promotion activities such as
encouraging less consumption of sugars to reduce caries risk, are primary preventive
measures. Other examples of primary prevention in medicine and dentistry include
the use of fluoridated toothpaste, vaccinations for infectious diseases like measles,
mumps, rubella, polio.

Secondary prevention is early disease detection, making it possible to prevent

the worsening of the disease and the emergence of symptoms, or to minimize
complications and limit disabilities before the disease becomes severe. It includes the
detection of diseases in asymptomatic patients with screening or diagnostic testing
and preventing the spread of communicable diseases. Examples in dentistry and
medicine include screening for caries, periodontal screening, and recording for
periodontal disease and screening for breast and cervical cancer.

Tertiary prevention aims to reduce the negative impact of an already established disease
by restoring function and reducing disease related complications. It also aims to improve the
quality of life for people with disease. Some examples include the use of amalgam and composite
fillings for dental caries, replacement of missing teeth with bridges, implants, or dentures or
insulin therapy for type II diabetes.

Activity 2. Self- monitoring
