Project Summary
Smart Systems Integration (SSI) combine electronic data processing with multi-modal sensing, actuation and
communication pertaining to the optical, biological and mechanical domains. This field is pervasive in all walks of
life and generates a plethora of applications ranging from autonomous industrial robots, mobile drones to
wearable electronics and the internet of everything (IoE) that target societal, environmental and economic
challenges facing the world today. These devices place a demand for an ever-increasing electronic component
and packaging density, multi-functionality, sophisticated data analytics, and safe data transmission for
interpretation by many non-technical users. Facing this challenge and opportunity, a new Joint International
Master’s degree programme in Smart Systems Integrated Solutions (SSIs EMJMD) is proposed to meet the
pressing industrial needs for qualified graduates. This programme is offered by a Consortium of three reputable
institutions, namely the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN, Norway), Aalto University (Aalto, Finland) and
Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME, Hungary). The programme (120 ECTS) is based on
the experience and best practice gained in previous Erasmus Mundus MSc’s.The proposed SSIs EMJMD uses
the complementary expertise and laboratory facilities of the three institutions to provide a unique programme that
strongly emphasizes the need for solutions to industrial needs, and truly offers an application-level approach to
Smart Systems Integration. The first three semesters are devoted to taught courses but with an industrially
relevant project, which will require taught material to be put to practice, achieving thereby the teaching philosophy
of “learning by doing”. The 1st semester at Aalto covers all the fundamental aspects of design, manufacturing,
packaging and applications of smart systems. The 2nd semester at USN permits the students to specialize into
either Smart Biomedical Systems or Cyberphysical Systems, with BME teaching design for system integration in
the 3rd semester. The 4th semester is devoted to an independent research project that culminates in a master
thesis. Courses on the fundamentals of innovation and entrepreneurship, internships and training in employable
skills will further extend this high quality academic programme, combined with courses in culture, society and
language that allow students to appreciate the diversity of European cultures but also the unique European way
of living. The programme will be delivered in close collaboration with a number of industrial and international
partners and is based on the successful partnership of the three institutions from over 10 years of previous
collaborations. Successful graduates are very attractive candidates for industry employment as well as for
doctoral studies.
