Learning Competency: Compose text which include multimodal elements.

At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

a) Identify multimodal elements and multimodal text types;

b) Determine the different multimodal elements;

c) Compose a text using multimodal elements;

d) Appreciate the importance of multimodal texts in real-life contexts.

Because this afternoon we are going to tackle about multimodal. But


before we carry on to the lesson proper, please read first the objectives
of today’s lesson.

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

a) Identify the different multimodal elements

b) Compose a text which include multimodal elements.


c) Appreciate the importance of multimodal texts by making
an e-journal

Okay! Now class, we can achieve these objectives if you are going to
listen and participate in our class discussion.
Is that clear? Yes, ma’am.

C. ABSTRATION

Before we tackle about multimodal class, let us define first what


communication is.
What is communication, class? Communication is the process of delivering a
message to someone, ma’am.

Very good! When we say communication, it means relaying/ delivering


messages.
Does communication only be done through verbal or face-to-face? No, ma’am.
Why? Because we can communicate through
written.

Yes, that’s right! It is because communication is not just about relaying


messages through voice or spoken, but also written or letters.
But remember class that communication does not limit its purpose to
verbal and written text. When technology arises, different modes of

communication have come into existence and they are called


multimodal, because communication uses multimodal.

Now, let us discuss multimodal, class.

It means more than one, ma’am.


From the word “multi”, what does it mean?

It relates to mode, ma’am.


How about modal?
Mode of communication.
Mode of what?

It means there are different ways or modes,
Now, what do you mean by multimodal, class? ma’am.

Exactly!
Multimodal means or can be defined as the combination of two or more
modes of communication within the same text and where all modes are
attended to as part of meaning-making.

In other words, many texts are multimodal because the meaning is


communicated through combination of two or more modes.

To sum up everything, there are 5 elements of multimodal text.

showing you some pictures and please observe carefully.

If messages are conveyed through viewing. What sensory system is
being used?

Exactly!

Because the first element of multimodal is visual.

Visual mode means using our eyes, ma’am.


Now, what is visual/ visual mode?

When we say visual mode, it refers to the images and characters that
people see. The visual mode helps writers communicate meaning in a
way that can be seen by the audience.

This mode includes:


Colors, layouts, style, design, size, and perspective. Visual
formatting, symbols, visual data (charts, graphs), animation (like gifs).

Look at this example, class.

“No guns” ma’am.


No guns allowed, ma’am.
What is the sign/ symbol all about?

Very good! This is a “no guns” symbol.

The visual element dominates on this sign. Where the red colored sign
signals not allowed and we can see that there is a gun, so if we are
going to understand the sign, it conveys a meaning of “no guns” or
“guns are not allowed” or “no firearms allowed”.

A traffic light.
What is this?

Traffic lights consist normally of three signals in terms of colors. Stop, ma’am.
What does red light symbolize? It means slow down and be ready to stop.
What does yellow light/ amber represent? Go, ma’am.
What about green light?

Very good! Other road signs, ma’am.


Now, can you give other examples of visual mode?

Let us proceed with the second element.

What have you observed from the pictures?
Auditory, ma’am.
Very good! What does it mean when using sound in delivering a
message? What sensory system is being used?

It means that this element is an audio mode.


It simply includes sound, ma’am.
What do you mean by audio mode, class?

Very good!

Audio mode is focused on sound but not limited to, music, sound
effects, ambient noises, silence, tone of voice in spoken language,
volume of sound, emphasis, natural/ unnatural sounds, and use of
volume beat, tempo, pitch, and rhythm.

We hear sounds around us and these sounds can draw thoughts,


memories, feelings, and emotions.

For example:

Sirens, ma’am.
What are these?
Danger or emergency.
Yes, that’s right. Now, what comes into your mind when we hear
sirens? Or what do sirens signify?

Exactly! Sirens signify danger or emergency.

Another examples:

 A recorded speech that was delivered orally to a live.

 Oral storytelling

 Festival music

Aside from these, can you give another example applying the audio
mode? None, ma’am.

Gestural mode refers to the way movement is interpreted. In other


words, gestural mode refers to non-verbal movements.

your posture, bearing, stance, and the subtle movement you

This refers to spoken or written words. In other words, it can be both

The linguistic mode refers to the written or spoken words. It is probably
the most widely used mode because it can be both heard on and read.

 the delivery of written or spoken text

Lastly, we have spatial mode.

Spatial mode refers to the physical arrangement, organization, and


proximity of the text.

It involves:

 Organization of objects in space

 Physical closeness between people and objects

 Direction

 Position of layout
