Safety first
Did you know that every year in the UK around 4000 people die in accidents in their own
homes? Almost half of these deaths are caused by falls. People should make sure that the
stairs are well lit and that they’re always kept clear of objects. Another 2 to 7 million people
are taken to hospital for burns, sprains, cuts and other injuries that happen at home. A lot
of these accidents involve children and 477,500 involve children under five years of age.
These numbers are very high and there are several simple ways to avoid many common
accidents.
Make sure heavy items are not kept on high shelves. Keep knives sharp, but make sure
children cannot reach them. Keep medicine bottles and chemicals on high shelves as
well, so that children can’t reach them. Wear protective clothing when doing DIY.
