INTRODUCTION
As a means of joining materials, adhesives have been used by mankind for many
centuries. However, it is not only in the last fifty years, or so, that the science and
technology of adhesion and adhesives has really progressed significantly and the
major advances that have been made may be traced from the middle of the
1940s. The main reason for this is that the adhesives employed in nearly all the
technically demanding applications are based upon synthetic polymers, and such
polymers have only been available for about the last fifty years. Synthetic
polymers possess the balance of properties that enables them to adhere readily
to other materials and to and to have an adequate strength so that they are
capable of transmitting the applied loads from one substrate to the other.

An adhesive may be defined as a material that, when applied to surfaces of

materials, can join them together and resist separation. The materials being
joined are commonly referred to as the substrates, or adherends. There is no
universally accepted definition of an engineering or structural adhesive, but it is
generally used to indicate an adhesive which, when hardened, gives a relatively
high modulus, high strength adhesive so that load-bearing joints may be
constructed.

The advantages that engineering adhesives can offer, compared to the more
traditional methods of joining such as boiling, brazing, welding, mechanical
fasteners, etc. The ability to join dissimilar materials to give lightweight, but
strong and stiff, structures: e.g. the joining of metals, plastics, rubbers, fibre
composites, wood, paper products, etc. An improvement in corrosion resistance.
5
Classification of Adhesives.

1. Thermosetting synthetic resin.

Thermosets molecules are cross-linked by

strong covalent intermolecular bonds, forming
one giant molecule. Cross-linking is irreversible
therefore thermosets can not be reprocessed
(re-melt). Cross-linking is achieved in curing
process initiated by heat, chemical agents,
radiation or evaporation of Solvents. Curing
results in sharp increase of strength, elasticity and stability of thermosets.
Most of thermosetting adhesives are based on
epoxies, polyesters, polyimides and phenolic
Example: silicon resin, epoxy resin, polyesters.

2. Thermoplastics resin.

Thermoplastics are Polymers, which soften

(become pliable and plastic) and melt when heated.
No new cross-links form (no chemical curing) when
a thermoplastic cools and harden. Thermoplastics
may be reprocessed many times by heating or
applying a solvent. Molecules of most of
thermoplastics combine long polymer chains alternating with monomer units.
Polyamides, cyanoacrylates, polyacrylates, polyvinyl acetate (PVA) are typical
thermoplastic adhesives.
Example: acrylics, polyvinyl, cellulose, acetate

6
▪ 3. Elastomeric adhesives:

Elastomers are polymers possessing high elasticity - may be reversibly
stretched at high degree. Elastomers consists of long lightly cross-
linked molecules. Elastomers are set (strengthened) by thermal curing or
solvent evaporation. Curing results in increase of cross-linking of the
molecules.
Typical elastomeric adhesives are based on natural rubbers, silicones,
acrylonitrile butadiene (nitrile), neoprene, Butyl, polyurethane, styrene-
butadiene.

7
Advantages of adhesive:

• Provide larger tress bearing area.

• Damps vibration absorbs and shock.
• Joint all shape and thickness.
• Provide smooth contours.
• Seal's joint.

Disadvantages of adhesive:

• Surface must be carefully cleaned.

• Long cure time may be needed.
• Heat and pressure may be required for cure.
• Rigid proses controls usually necessary.
• Special training may be required.

8
Engineering properties of adhesive:

• Adhesion to a verity of substrates allows bonding dissimilar material is

necessary.
• High cohesive strength is desirable.
• Flexibility improves peel strength by flexing with peel stress.
• High elastic modulus of substrate and adhesive resists stress at the bond line.
• Flexibility damping resistance resists thermal expansion stresses.

Characteristics of adhesive:

• It should have suitable surface tension

• It should have a film forming ability.
• It should have negligible creep under stress.
•It should have low viscosity
• It should have polar groups.
• It should have suitable thermal coefficient of expansion.

9
Conclusion:

Hence we completed our micro project “To study the engineering properties
of adhesive materials”.

Result

The topic of our micro project is “To study the engineering properties of adhesive
material” while repairing the micro project we get to know more information
about adhesive and its classification. We also get to know how important
adhesive engineering. Also, we study the properties, characteristics and
advantages and disadvantages adhesive material.
In a nutshell we study in detail about the adhesive, which would be very useful in
our future.
