Are all these rules clear? Yes, teacher!

Okay, very good! I hope that you will follow all of these class rules.

 Review What was our topic last meeting, class? Our topic last meeting is
about waves.

Okay, what is waves? A wave is a disturbance

that travels or propagates
from the place where it
was created.

What are the 3 types of waves? These are transverse,

longitudinal wave and
surface wave.

All right, in the previous module, you have learned how waves carry
energy, types of waves, properties and its propagation.

Before you move on, answer the activity to recall previous topic for
better understanding of the topic in this module.

Activity 1: The Wavey Parts

I. Label the different parts of a transverse wave and a longitudinal wave
given the illustration below. Write your answers on a separate sheet of
paper

II. Match the following wave quantities that best described the
statement. Write the letter of your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

 Motivation Activity 2: Loop Me!

Let’s play Word Factory! Search Ten (10) important terms in the puzzle,
which you will encounter as you go on with your module. Loop them
horizontally, vertically or diagonally. After which, write all the words in
the box.

Okay, I will give you Five minutes to finish the activity. Yes, Ma’am!

How do you find the activity? It was fun, Ma’am!

What strategy did you apply in order to find the answers? We really need to read
carefully and understand
those words and think
that they are related to
each other.

What words did you get in the box? Speed, amplitude,

wavelength, etc.…

Wow, very good! Let’s give a hand to everyone! Everyone is clapping their
hands.

Now, what do you think is our lesson for today? The Characteristics of
Sound, Ma’am
Okay, so our topic for today is about Characteristics of Sound.

 Reading of the Within the given period, you are expected to:
lesson objectives  Discuss the nature of sound
 Describe the characteristics of sound in terms of:
o Wavelength.
o velocity.
o amplitude.
 Applying the properties of sound using different materials to an
emergency situation
 Vocabulary Unlocking of difficult words:
 Amplitude - the maximum displacement or distance moved by a
point on a vibrating body or wave measured from
its equilibrium position.
 Wavelength - the distance between identical points (adjacent
crests) in the adjacent cycles of a waveform signal propagated in
space or along a wire.
 Velocity - a vector expression of the displacement that an object
or particle undergoes with respect to time.
 Pitch - refers to highness and lowness of sound.
 Loudness - how soft or how intense the sound is as perceived by
the ear and interpreted by the brain.

1. In your activity, you have observed that sound is produced
by singing, clapping, tapping the table, container and can.
The vibrations created by tapping and it produced the
sound. This also shows that?

2. Sound is more distinct and louder when in what in

3. You have observed that each material you’ve used has
different sound created. Sound has properties which are
pitch and loudness of sound. What do you think is the
difference between this two?

3. Abstraction Sound is more distinct in solids than in any other medium. It is louder
than that of in liquid and in gas. It is because the particles of a solid are
more compact than that of liquid and gas. This allows for sound to
travels fastest in solid and slowest in gas.

The table shows the speed of sound in different media.

NATURE OF SOUND WAVES

Soundwaves are examples of longitudinal waves. The compressions and

rarefactions can be compared to the crests and troughs of a transverse
wave. They are also known as mechanical waves since sound waves need
medium in order to propagate.

Populations differ in
factors such as their
distribution, numbers,
age structure
(proportions of
individuals in different
age
groups), growth
patterns, and density
(number of individuals
in a certain space).

Recall that there are

three general patterns
of population
distribution or
dispersion observed in
a natural habitat. These
are clumping,
uniform dispersion,
and random dispersion
(Figure below).
CHARACTERISTICS OF SOUND
WAVES

1. Pitch and Frequency(f)

Sound frequency is the number of sound waves that passes through a

point in a certain amount of time, such as one second. The frequency is
related to the pitch of a sound which is defined as the perception of
highness or lowness. The faster the sound waves move, the greater the
frequency and the higher the pitch. The hertz (Hz) is a unit to measure
frequency and so pitch is measured in hertz.

Another characteristic of wave which is related to the pitch of a sound

wave is the wavelength. The minimum distance in which a sound wave
repeats itself is called its wavelength.
The human ear can hear sounds of frequencies ranging from 20 Hz to 20
000 Hz. This is called audio frequency range. Vibrational frequencies
beyond 20 000 Hz are called ultrasonic frequencies while extremely low
frequencies are known as infrasonic frequencies.

2. Loudness and Amplitude (A)

The amount of energy a sound wave carries is known as

intensity of the sound.

Loudness is a psychological sensation that differs for different people

and it is related to the intensity of sound. So, the loudness of a sound is
determined mainly by the amplitude of the sound wave.

3. TIMBRE

The timbre (or tone color or tone quality) of a sound is used to

distinguish between two different sounds that have the same pitch and
loudness. This tone quality is very important since it helps us to identify
what produced the sound. A note played on a violin does not sound like
the same note played on a trumpet. The next time you listen to a band
or an orchestra, pay attentions to the sounds of the individual
instruments. Can you distinguish them.

Sound cannot travel in a vacuum. Remember that sound is a mechanical

wave which needs a medium in order to propagate.

4. Application Activity 3: “CREATE TO BE SAVE”

In this present time, environmental problems are one of the major
disasters that affects our community. To inform everybody on the
coming disaster, create loud sounds from different things in order to
produce sound with larger amplitude, longer wavelength and faster
velocity. As a student, we must be prepared in order to make ourselves
and others safe. What are those things or object that can be used as an
early warning device considering a loud sound must be produced.
V. Evaluation Direction: Arrange the following materials where sound can travel the
slowest to the fastest, 1 as the slowest and 8 as the fastest.
VI. Assignment. Direction: Answer the following questions completely. Write your
answer in the space provided.

1. Which would best transmit sound: steel, water, or gas? Why?

2. If you are in space, are you capable of listening to another spaceship

approaching you? Why or why not?

3. How are sound waves like water waves? How are they not like water
waves?

Is that clear? Yes, Ma’am!

Any clarifications or questions? None so far, Teacher!

VII. CONCLUDING ACTIVITY I hope that you learned a lot from our lesson for today.

Okay, so before we leave the classroom, kindly pick a piece of paper and (They pick a piece of
