CHAPTER 1
Introduction
Background of the Study

Science and Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) is the strand that the school of

Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Manabo, Abra offers. By reading the name of the strand, one

can already think that the students really need some facilities and equipment that the STEM

students must use in order for them to achieve the goal of the strand they are into. Having

enough facilities and equipment has an impact on both teachers and students. With respect to

teachers, school facilities and equipment affects the teacher’s effort, performance, retention and

commitment. With respect to students, school facilities and equipment affects the student’s

behavior, engagement, learning, growth in achievement. In adequate facilities and resources in

school is extremely difficult in terms of serving large number of students with complex needs.

School facilities also play a vital role on the students and teachers physical and emotional

needs. By satisfying these two needs, the educational goals can be actualized. Teaching and

learning is impossible in a school if there is no facilities and equipment so in other words, these

things are referred to us human and physical resources that are needed or used in school in order

to aid learning and teaching. According to Knezevich (1975), he emphasized that the physical

needs are through provision of safe structure, adequate sanitary facilities, be balanced visual

environment appropriate thermal environment, and sufficient shelter space for his work and play.
These emotional needs are met by creating pleasant surroundings, a friendly atmosphere and

inspiring environment.

Philippines' education system has changed and it is almost a new start for every Filipino

citizen. The Grade 12 students are now considered as experimental students because they are the

first students who will experience the so called K-12 curriculum. This means that the Grade 12

students of OLLHS belong to the first batch of K-12 curriculum and the Grade 11 are the second

batch. Before they stepped into senior high school, teachers and some organizations had

discussed to them about senior high school. They presented those details and what to expect

during and after they graduate from senior high. The facilities and equipment are added into their

discussion and they even showed them some pictures of it. This gave the students an expectation

on their future learning experiences. The different strands and tracks of the K-12 curriculum

have the difference of needed school facilities and equipment. One of the strands is the so called

STEM strand and it belongs to the academic track. The findings of this research will evaluate if

the expectations of the STEM students of OLLHS Manabo, Abra is satisfied on the school's

facilities and equipment.

The senior high building of Our Lady of Lourdes High School is a former hospital and is

located on the north side of the junior high building of the school. Some parts of the former

hospital is renovated to make it a senior high building. So it means that some parts of its facilities

are already old and it may affect the student's comfort, reason for us (the researchers) to include

the age of the facilities in determining the satisfaction of the STEM students.
Fulfillment of student's needs is a must for schools, because with the absence of needs, it is

very impossible for the students to learn and for the teachers to teach. School facilities and

equipment is one of the needs of the students and teachers. But it depend on what strands the

students is because every strand has some different type of needs. In this research study, we will

determine first the awareness of the STEM students at Our Lady of Lourdes students about the

facilities and equipment that is needed for them to avoid bias. Then we will determine their

satisfaction on the equipment that the school have.

Some of the mentioned independent variables that affect the student's achievement and

behavior are about equipment and facilities. This is why this survey research is beneficial. This

aims to determine the satisfaction of STEM students at Our Lady OF Lourdes High School

Manabo, Abra. And after this, the school will recognize the importance of appropriate facilities

and equipment as needed.

Statement of the Problem

General Statement

This survey research aims to determine the satisfaction of the Senior High School

students to the school facilities and equipment at Our Lady of Lourdes high School, Manabo,

Abra S.Y.2017-2018. It also examines the possible impact of school facilities and equipment to

the student's performance in learning. This research study answers the following:

Sub Questions

1. What facilities and equipment are currently utilized?

2. What are the facilities and equipment that the STEM students of Our Lady of Lourdes

High School think a STEM student in Academic track needed?

3. Do the STEM students of Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Manabo, Abra meet their

expectations on the school facilities and equipment of the said school?

4. Do facilities and equipment of the school affect the learning performance of the students?
6

Review of Related Literature

According to Lemasters, Linda Kay, fifty-three students has been conducted since 1980

and were synthesized that included the independent variables of noise facility age, color,

lighting, maintenance, density, climate condition, and classroom structure. Data suggest that all

the independent variables have an effect on student achievement and behavior.

Lamb, S., Rumberger, R., Jesson, D., and Tesse, R. (2004).School performance in Australia

results from analyses of school effectiveness and learning with respect to achieve quality of

education. The performance of school facilities significantly affected on student achievement.

Therefore, the study on measuring school facility performance is basically important to be taken

in order to provide appropriate teaching and learning environment.

School facilities may also indirectly affect student’s performance. This conclusion has

been drawn by Lamb et al in 2004.

(Uline and Tschannen-Moran) suggested that “school climate”, which can influence

teacher quality/ satisfaction, may be impacted by teachers’ perceptions of school facilities.

(Schneider, 2002) concluded that "School facilities affect learning. Spatial

configurations, noise, heat, cold, light, and air quality obviously bear on students’ and teachers’

ability to perform.
Ajzen and Fishbein (1980) theorized that an individual’s intentions, and thus their

behavior, may be predicted by attitudes. From this basis, other researchers have offered that

student satisfaction supports their intention to stay in college, which supports student retention

(Martirosyan, Saxon, &Wanjohi, 2014)

Satisfaction is the consumer's sense that consumption provides outcomes against a

standard of pleasure versus displeasure.”(Oliver, 1999, p. 34). The satisfaction concept has also

been tended recently to the context of higher education. The still limited amount of research

suggests that student satisfaction is a complex concept, consisting of several dimensions (Marzo-

Navarro et al. 2005ab; Richardson, 2005). By referring to Oliver and DeSarbo’s (1989)

definition of satisfaction, Elliott and Shin, (2002, p. 198), describe student satisfaction as the

favorability of a student’s subjective evaluation of the various outcomes and experiences

associated with education. Student satisfaction is being shaped continually by repeated

experiences in campus life (Gruber, Fuß, Voss, &Glaeser-Zikuda, 2010).

Satisfaction is a well-researched topic in both academic and non-academic settings, in

academic settings, students’ satisfaction data helps colleges and universities make their

curriculum more responsive to the needs of a changing marketplace (Eyck, Tews&Ballester,

2009; Witowski, 2008). In making curriculum more effective and responsive, it is important to

evaluate effectiveness measures concerning the curriculum of each college, department, and

program (Ratcliff, 1992; Elliott & Healy, 2001; Özgüngör, 2010; Peters, 1988; Billups, 2008;

Aman, 2009). The effectiveness of a curriculum can be evaluated using direct performance

measures (e.g., comprehensive exams, projects, and presentations) and by indirect performance
measures, e.g., students’satisfaction with the curriculum ( Tessema, Ready, & "William" Yu,

2012)

The relationship between student satisfaction and academic performance is important in

contemporary higher education, attracting much attention by teaching practitioners and

academics because it may reinforce powerful synergies at work in students’ educational

experience.(MahadKhalifDhaqane and Nor Abdulle Afrah,2016)

Student satisfaction has become a major challenge for the universities and it has been

recognized that student satisfaction is the major source of competitive advantage and this

satisfaction also leads towards student retention, attraction for new students and positive word of

mouth communication, as well (Arambewela& Hall)

Satisfied students will lead more productive lives while still at the undergraduate level

(Cotton, Dollard, & de Jonge, 2002). Other studies have suggested that students who are satisfied

with their undergraduate education are more successful in graduate school than their less

satisfied peers (Ostergaard&Kristensen, 2005). Additionally, large-scale European studies show

that satisfied students are better able to enter and compete in the global workplace (Vaastra& De

Vries, 2007). As such, then, satisfaction matters both before and after graduation, affects current

and future quality of life, and has an impact at the national level.

Khiat, Henry (2014) investigated the relationship between the learning satisfaction and

academic achievement of non-traditional learners in Singapore. Data were collected from 880

students through a component of the student evaluation exercise in a Singapore university in

2011. A mixed-methods approach was adopted in the analysis. Spearman’s rho coefficient stated
that there is a weak but significant correlation between academic achievement and learning

satisfaction.

Significance of the Study

The conducted research will give benefit or additional help for improvement to the

following:

1. School Administrators- They will be able to use the result of this research as a tool for a

plan of their future facilities and equipment improvement action.

2. Faculty and Staff- It would be beneficial for them because they can get enough

knowledge and skills for their future teaching technique.

3. Students- benefit and knowledge can be acquired in this research that can help them for

their future endeavors.

10

Scope and Delimitations

This study concentrates on the STEM students of Our Lady of Lourdes High School

Manabo, Abra in the school year 2017-2018.

All of the senior high students of OLLHS are respondents because they all belong to STEM

strand, but the survey will be separated. It is more organized if the survey will be done

separately. The start of the distributing of our survey papers will be at grade 11 then next are the

grade 12, it is to make sure that the questionnaires will be retrieved properly. The senior high

building of OLLHS is separated from the junior high building, reason for it to be easy and more

organize in distributing the questionnaires.

11

CHAPTER 2

Research Design and Methodology

Data Gathering Procedure

All the STEM students are informed about the research project. This is done by

discussing to them what this research is all about, the researchers’ objective, and why these

students are the respondents. In other words, the researchers ask for consent. After this, a

questionnaire is given to the respondents regarding to the research study. The answers of the

students are analyzed and then translated into numerical data showing the STEM students of Our

Lady of Lourdes High School’s satisfaction to the school facilities and equipment.
13

Respondents

The respondents are the senior high school students of Our Lady of Lourdes High

School Manabo, Abra who are taking the STEM strand. Both Grade 11 and 12 are classified to

be respondents because they acquire the requirements to be one. But there are two grade 12

students who are not present during the survey so the researchers excluded them. The researchers

of this study are also Grade 12 students so they are also excluded from this research study. The

total population of the Grade 12 students is thirty-one (31) (should be 38 but me, my four group

mates, and the two absents are not considered as respondents even if we are one of the Grade 12

students) and the 80% of it is 24.8, so at least 25 questionnaires from the Grade 12 students shall

be retrieved. The total population of the Grade 11 students is forty-three (43) and the 80% of it is

34.4, so at least 34 questionnaires from the Grade 11 students shall be retrieved.

14

Sampling Design

This research study uses Universal sampling. The totality of the population are the

subjects. All of the respondents are given a questionnaire and at least eighty percent (80%) of the

questionnaires in both Grade 11 and 12 are retrieved. A total of fifty-nine (59) questionnaires

from the STEM students are needed to make the sampling design valid.
15

Instruments

A questionnaire is used to gather data from the STEM student of Our Lady of Lourdes

High School. This is based upon the researchers’ purpose and is appropriate for gathering such

data for a research like this.

16

Ethical Consideration

The research preserves privacy and confidentiality whenever possible for all of the

respondents. Sources of information such as works of other researchers are credited and

acknowledged. Respect privacy to any feedback or answer of the respondents is observed.

20

Table 2 presents the percentage of the data gathered on the survey answered by sixty (60)

STEM students of our Lady of Lourdes, Manabo, Abra. The numbers on the table are the

percentage of respondents who filled a checkmark on the corresponding column on the

questionnaires. The first column are the names of the facilities and equipment, the second

column is the percentage of STEM students (our respondents) who are not satisfied on the

facilities and equipment being named, the third column is the percentage of respondents who are

moderately satisfied on the facilities and equipment, the fourth column is the percentage of

respondents who are fully satisfied, and the fifth column is the percentage of respondents who

are highly satisfied on the school facilities and equipment being named.

A total of sixty (60) questionnaires have been retrieved. It is still valid because fifty nine

(59) which is the eighty percent (80%) of seventy four (74) is the minimum number of

questionnaires that should be retrieved to make the survey valid.

Question number:

On the survey questionnaire, there is a question that asks if the respondent’s expectation

about the school facilities and equipment is satisfied. Eighteen (18) respondents answered “yes”

because of the reason of presence of needed facilities and equipment at the school building such

as computers, computer rooms, laboratory and its materials, and library with needed books in it.
Some say they are satisfied because they observed that the administration of the school is trying

their best to provide the students the facilities and equipment for a better flow of learning. Some

answered that the facilities and equipment of the school can sustain the needs for their studies.

21

The facilities and equipment of the school is always available and can be used every time it is

needed reason why some respondents are satisfied on their expectation on it. And some answered

yes because the facilities and equipment of the school did not fail to help them in their studies.

On the other hand, forty two (42) of the respondents answered “no”. They claim that they

are not satisfied because some facilities and equipment of the school are not available, not

enough and not complete. They also said that the school has a lacking on the facilities and

equipment for STEM track such as the needed materials for experiments or the laboratory tools

and other materials for science purposes, computers, and engineering materials. The maintenance

for the facilities and equipment also lacks. Others answered that they are not satisfied on the

school facilities and equipment because of the lacking of equipment used for ventilation such as

the air conditioner, electric fan and lights. Other respondents say they are not satisfied because

the equipment for water at the senior high building are not functioning well and the equipment

for emergency purposes is lacking.

More STEM students of Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Manabo, Abra claimed

that they are not satisfied on the school facilities and equipment. By the use of the formula;

18/60(100), where 18 is the number of respondents who answered “yes”, 60 is the total number

of the retrieved questionnaires, and 100 is always a part of the solution to get a percentage, the

research finds out that thirty (30%) of the STEM students are satisfied with the school facilities
and equipment. Using the same formula but changing the eighteen (18) to forty two (42) which is

the number of students who answered” no”, the research finds that seventy percent (70%) of the

STEM students are not satisfied with the school facilities and equipment.

22

Another question in the survey questionnaire is if the school facilities and equipment

affects the respondent’s learning process and how can it affect and not affect it at all. Thirty six

(36) respondents answered that they are affected by the school facilities and equipment so, and

twenty four (24) respondents answered that they are not affected by it. By the use of the same

formula, the research finds out that sixty percent (60%)of the STEM students of Our Lady of

Lourdes High School, Manabo, Abra is affected by the school facilities and equipment, and the

remaining forty percent (40%) are the respondents who are not affected by the school facilities

and equipment.

The respondents who answered that they are being affected by the school facilities and

equipment reasoned out that school facilities and equipment helps them to gather information,

make schoolwork easier, explore things, gain comfort, students can learn from it, give visual and

physical interaction for more knowledge and experience, and it is a medium in studying. This is

how the respondents answered how the school facilities and equipment affect their studies. So if

the school facilities and equipment cannot do is functions well, the students will be affected

negatively on their learning process.

3
The last question on the questionnaire is for the respondents to list down the school

facilities and equipment that they think a STEM student needs. And the respondents suggested

these facilities and equipment:

23

 Computers

 Laboratory equipment

 Laboratory

 Library

 Engineering tools (examples: glue gun, frequency generator, power supplies)

 Books and modules

 Audio Visual Room

 Exhibit room

 Chairs and tables

 Materials for internet

 Ventilations (air conditioner and electric fan)

 Water system

 Medicines

 Clinic

 First aid kit

 Cleaning materials

 Television

 Lightings
 Proper comfort rooms
24

CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Findings

The study is conducted for the purpose of determining the satisfaction of the STEM

students of Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Manabo, Abra on the school facilities and

equipment. The findings show that there are more STEM students who are not satisfied than the

satisfied on the school facilities and equipment of Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Manabo,

Abra. Thirty percent (30%) of the respondents are satisfied on their expectations to the school’s

facilities and equipment and seventy percent (70%) of the respondents are not satisfied into it. It

also shows that there are a lot of facilities and equipment on the school needed by a STEM

student but sometimes fail to do its purpose because of insufficiency, availability and

malfunction. More STEM students of the said school claimed that their learning processes are

affected by the school facilities and equipment. Sixty percent (60%) of the respondents are

affected by the school facilities and equipment while forty percent (40%) are not affected.

Larger numbers of students are not satisfied on their expectations to the school’s facilities and

equipment, so it means that they expected more before they enter senior high in the particular

school. However, the students have no feedback about the facilities and equipment’s sturdiness

and this means they feel safe and confident with it. The research study also finds that Our Lady

of Lourdes High School, Manabo, Abra has computers, laboratory, laboratory equipment,

library, books, chairs and tables, air conditioned rooms, comfort rooms, lighting, water system,
25

cleaning materials, and computer room at the senior high building where the STEM students are

studying but it has no engineering tools, exhibit rooms, audio visual room, and school clinic.
26

Conclusion

This research study entitled “A Survey Research on the Satisfaction of the STEM

Students to the School Facilities and Equipment at Our Lady of Lourdes High School,

Manabo, Abra” therefore conclude that the STEM students of Our Lady of Lourdes High

School, Manabo, Abra want maintenance, sufficiency, and availability of the school’s facilities

and equipment for them to be satisfied on it. Thirty percent (30%) of the respondents are

satisfied on their expectations to the school facilities and equipment at the senior high building

and seventy percent (70%) are not satisfied. Sixty percent (60%) of the respondents has an

affected learning process because of school facilities and equipment and forty percent (40%) are

not affected.
27

Recommendation

This research recommends the school of Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Manabo,

Abra to maintain maintenance, availability, and sufficiency of the school’s facilities and

equipment for the STEM students on their school to be satisfied, because the satisfaction of the

students has an impact on their studies based on the findings of the study. According to the

research tables, the internet has the highest numbers of respondent who marked “not satisfied”.

The school should provide internet tools like pocket Wi-Fi and Router to satisfy the STEM and

because internet is very useful to the students specially when researching. Most of the

respondents answered “Moderately Satisfied” on the questionnaire given to them, so this

research recommends the school of OLLHS to provide the students a more sufficient facilities

and equipment with maintenance and security to avoid destruction of it. The results of this

research presented that most of the needed facility and equipment for a STEM student is present

at Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Manabo, Abra. To satisfy the students, the school should

provide maintenance for the facilities and equipment, availability of it to the students especially

when they need it, and its sufficiency is merely needed. This is not only for the students but also

for the teachers and other staffs of the school, because they also need these facilities and

equipment for teaching and learning process.
