PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
toward your personal vision with persistence, tenacity and enthusiasm will inspire and
encourage others to do the same.
Lead by example
As a leader, the best way to build credibility and gain the respect of others is to set the right
examples. Demonstrate the behaviour that you want people to follow. If you demand a lot of
your team, you should also be willing to set high standards for yourself. Aligning your words
and actions will help to build trust and make your team more willing to follow your example.
Demonstrate integrity
A leader with integrity draws on their values to guide their decisions, behaviour and dealings
with others. They have clear convictions about what is right and wrong and are respected for
being genuine, principled, ethical and consistent. They have a strong sense of character,
keep their promises, and communicate openly, honestly and directly with others. Displaying
integrity through your daily actions will see you rewarded with loyalty, confidence, and
respect from your employees.
Communicate effectively
The ability to communicate clearly, concisely and tactfully is a crucial leadership skill.
Communication involves more than just listening attentively to others and responding
appropriately. It also includes sharing valuable information, asking intelligent questions,
soliciting input and new ideas, clarifying misunderstandings, and being clear about what you
want. The best leaders also communicate to inspire and energise their staff.
Recognise success
Frequently and consistently recognising achievement is one of the most powerful habits of
inspiring leaders. For people to stretch themselves and contribute their best efforts, they
need to know their work will be valued and appreciated. Find ways to celebrate the
achievements of your people, even if it’s through a simple “well done”. As well as boosting
morale, it will also strengthen their motivation to continue giving their best.
Empower others
Great leaders understand that for people to give their best, they must have a sense of
ownership over their work and believe that what they’re doing is meaningful. Communicate
clear goals and deadlines to your team, and then give them the autonomy and authority to
decide how the work gets done. Challenge them with high expectations and encourage them
to be creative and show innovation.

REMEMBER
KEY POINTS:
• A person playing a multiple role may have to play them all concurrently or
sequence-wise, according to the condition of his life or his occupation; and one
of his roles may be so dominant that it will distinctly condition his individuality. An
industrialist may be so engrossed in his occupational duties that he fails to play
his roles as husband or father effectively.
• Sociologists have noted that social roles can be played in different ways. Early in
life, a child begins the practice of role – playing by ‘playing-at-a-role” when it
takes up a doll and enacts the roles of both mother and child with it. The child at
this stage gathers certain ideas about certain standards of behaviour; it forms an
idea as to how mother behave and how the child bears itself to the parent.
• However, when ‘role-playing” begins, each individual plays his own role not only
according to the definition of his particular role as set by society, but according to
the actual expectation of the other party or parties in relation to whom he plays it.
The individual who plays the role of the father must bear in mind the reactions of
the child to his behaviour, and so will the child be conscious of the parents’
reactions to his behaviour and to any deviation on his part from the fixed
standards expected by society.
• Our roles in society or in a group are dynamic and constantly evolving. In many
cases, during this transformation, we have the greatest responsibility for the way
it changes. In this sense, problems usually arise when we’re lost and unsure of
ourselves. This happens when we try to adopt a role that goes beyond our limits
or when we introduce ourselves to too much change too quickly. Our bodies and
minds have a difficult time responding to radical changes.
• At the end of the day, our roles should be unique and non-transferable. There
may be things we need to adapt to when we enter a new group. These roles
probably come with a set of general guidelines and actions, but they should
accommodate us and not the other way around.
• Building your role requires time and intelligence. After all, your role is an
opportunity to show the world what you’re capable of.
