Filipino Scientists and Their Contribution To The Society 1. Dr. Rolando C. Dela Cruz-Anti-Cancer Cream
Filipino scientists have made many important contributions to society. Dr. Rolando C. Dela Cruz invented an anti-cancer cream made from cashew nuts and herbs to treat basal cell carcinoma. Dr. Pedro Escuro developed improved rice varieties that were widely adopted and profitable. Dr. Gregorio Y. Zara invented the first videophone in 1955. Dr. Felix D. Maramba created a coconut oil-fueled generator to provide cheap, efficient energy. Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez devoted 53 years to controlling leprosy in the Philippines and other Asian countries.

FILIPINO SCIENTISTS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOCIETY
1. Dr. Rolando C. Dela Cruz- Anti-Cancer Cream
-His invention is a skin cream called DeBCC, which is used for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common type of skin cancer. The cream contains a formulation of cashew nut extracts and other Philippine herbs.
2. Dr. Pedro Escuro – Nine Seed Board Rice Varieties
-Dr. Escuro proceeded to culture the "best" rice variety he had in mind, and he succeeded. Under his leadership, improved Philippine rice varieties were produced, among them are C4-63, C4-137, C4-113, C-168, C22, UPL-Ri-5, PSB Rc 16, PSB RC 36), as well as three improved wheat varieties (Trigo 1, Trigo 2, Trigo 3). The "C" varieties were widely adopted in the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Southern India, and other Southeast Asian countries. Not only the varieties are resistant to pests and other harmful conditions, but they also proved to be sound investments, as they returned profit 250-fold.
3. Dr. Gregorio Y. Zara- Two-Way Video Telephone
-The first recorded videophone, or a two-way television- telephone, was invented by a Filipino engineer and physicist named Gregorio Zara. It was taken out of science fiction in 1955 when he first introduced the device and patented it as a “photo phone signal separator network.” Apparently, it did not sell. The videophone incorporates a personal video camera and display, a microphone and speaker, and a data- conversion device.
4. Dr. Felix D. Maramba – Coconut Oil-Fueled Power
Generator -Felix Maramba is the scientist who created a coconut oil- fueled power generator and is also credited with developing one of the world's most profitable biogas systems. The purpose of creating the generator was to provide a cheap and efficient readily available source of energy that has made a tremendous difference in the lives of many people. As well as being a cheap and readily available source of energy, it is also very environmentally friendly which has been an important factor in all of his work.
5. Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez- Controlling Hansen’s Disease
Renowned Filipino leprologist and researcher. Dr. Rodriguez devoted 53 years to the control of leprosy in the country. As one of the very few pioneers in the early fight against leprosy all over the world, he proposed a control program that was not only adopted in the Philippines but in other Asian countries as well.
6. Dr. Julian A. Banzon- Alternative Fuels
-Banzon investigated the use of indigenous crops as sources of renewable fuels and chemicals. He researched the production of ethyl ester biofuels from sugarcane and coconuts and developed new methods for extracting oil from coconuts using chemicals. The findings of his research contributed to the growth of the food, chemical commodities, and biofuel industries.
7. Dr. Ramon C. Barba- Mango Flowering
He developed a process that caused the flowering and fruiting of mango trees three times a year, instead of once a year, so dramatically improving yields. Mango flowering is an important physiological event that sets the start of fruit production. Mango trees flower in response to the age of the last vegetative flush in tropical conditions. In contrast, cool inductive temperatures induce flowering under subtropical conditions.
8. Dr. Angel C. Alcala – Artificial Coral Reefs
Alcala may be best known for his research related to the rehabilitation of coral reefs. In 1977, he created the first artificial reef, and this reef became a model for many other fisheries development programs around the world. Artificial reefs are intentionally placed benthic structures built of natural or man-made materials, which are designed to protect, enhance, or restore components of marine ecosystems.
9. Dr. Juan Salcedo Jr. - Enriched Rice
Juan Salcedo developed “Enriched Rice,” a rice variety fortified with vitamin B1, which helps prevent beriberi. His discovery helped reduce the cases of beriberi in the Philippines and in other countries. 10. Dr. Fe V. del Mundo – Bamboo Incubator In a bid to help families in rural communities without electricity, del Mundo invented a bamboo incubator in 1941. According to a biographical report on del Mundo by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, the physician's makeshift incubator was composed of two native laundry baskets made of bamboo.
