What’s In

Notes to the Teacher

To assess student’s prior knowledge of the lesson let them do Activity 1
and 2. Students start in determining the length of a segment in a number
line bringing them to figure out the distance between two points on the
coordinate plane. The concept involves finding the distance between the x-
coordinates, finding the distance between the y-coordinates and finally
finding the diagonal distance using the Pythagorean Theorem.

Activity 1. What’s my Length?

Below is a number line, find the length of the indicated segments and answer
the questions that follow.
P Q R S T V

1. 4.
2. 5.
3. 6.

Questions:
1. How did you find the length of each segment?
2. Did you use the coordinates of points in finding the length of each
segment? If yes, how?
3. Is the length of the same as the length of ? How about and
? Explain your answer.

Was it easy for you to find the length of each segment? I am sure it
was! What is the significance of this activity to the new lesson? Let us find
out as we keep doing this module.

4
Activity 2. Jog to Catch Them Up!
Directions: Consider the scenario below and answer each question that
follow.
Robert was advised to jog everyday by his doctor because of his health
condition. With this jog routine activity, he decided that his route will start from
his house passing through the market then to the plaza and finally to the
coffee shop as illustrated in the figure below.
y

Robert’s House

Plaza Coffee Shop

Market

1. What are the coordinates corresponding to Robert’s house, Plaza,

Market and Coffee shop?

2. Connect the points representing Robert’s house (R), Plaza (P) and
Coffee Shop (C). What kind of triangle is formed?

3. By using the coordinates, how do you determine the horizontal

distance from P to C or to P? How about the vertical distance from R
to P or P to R?

4. How about the distance from Robert’s house (R) to Coffee Shop (C)?
What equation or formula you will use to solve its distance?

How was the activity you have just done? Were you able to get
the coordinates of a point on the coordinate plane? What about finding
the distance between two objects or places? Can you still remember the
process in finding the distance between any two objects? By taking into
account the next activity, let us find out the derivation of the distance
formula.

Activity 3. Let Me Figure Out

Directions: Look at the figure below, replace the coordinates of C by (x1, y1)
and R by (x2, y2). The resulting coordinates of P is (x2, y1).

to P while the vertical distance from R to P is the same as the distance from P
to R. Thus, the expressions that represents the distance between this points
are the absolute value of the difference of their x-coordinates (horizontal) or y-
coordinates (vertical).
PC =|x1 x2| or |x2 x1|

RP =|y1 y2| or |y2 y1|

Question:

1. By using the given length of and in the illustration above, how is

the length of the diagonal distance computed?
2. What do you think is the formula or equation to be used in finding the
distance between any two points? Explain.

Considering the illustrations and the activities presented earlier, you

were able to find the distance between any two points using the methods
you previously learned. Thus, you can figure out the distance formula. Now,
how does distance formula facilitate in solving real-life problems. You will
find out as you go through this module. Read and understand some
important notes pertaining distance formula as well as the examples
presented so that you will be guided in doing the series of activities.

What is It

Distance between Two Points

The distance between two points is always positive when the two
points are different, and zero if the points are the same. When the two points
are aligned horizontally, it can be obtained by getting the absolute value of the
difference of their x-coordinates. Similarly, the vertical distance between two
points can be solved by using the absolute value of the difference of their y-
coordinates.
Example 1. Find the distance between V(1, 3) and W(8, 3).

y
Solution:

V W

Since V and W are aligned horizontally, then VW = = 7 or VW = 7.

7
Example 2. Determine the distance between Q(3, -2) and S(3, 6).
y
Solution:
S

Q and S are aligned vertically, so the distance between them is

QS = = = 6 or QS = 8

The Distance Formula

The distance between any two points in the coordinate plane can be
solved using the distance formula, whether they are aligned vertically or
horizontally.
Consider two points A and B with coordinates (x1, y1) and (x2, y2)
respectively. The distance d between these points can be calculated using the
distance formula

d= or

AB .

B(x2, y2)

AB

A(x1, y1)

Example 1: Find the distance between A(3, 5) and B(7, 8). x

8
Solution: The following can be the steps in finding the distance
between A and B.

1. Let x1 = 3 , y1 = 5 , x2 = 7 and y2 = 8
2. Substitute the corresponding values of x1, y1, x2 and y2
in the distance formula AB
.
3. Simplify the resulting equation.

AB

5
The distance between A and B is 5 units.

Example 2. Calculate the distance between M(2, 6) and N(-5, 9).

Solution: 1. Let x1 = 2, y1 = 6 , x2 = -5 and y2 = 9

2. Substitute the corresponding values of x1, y1, x2 and y2 in
the Distance formula AB .

AB .

3. Simplify the resulting equation.

AB

AB or AB 7.62

The distance between M and N is units or

approximately 7.62 units

The distance formula has many applications in real life situations. It can
be used to find the distance between two objects or places particularly map
problems.

9
Example 3. On the coordinate plane below, a map is drawn showing
the different health centers of Buenavista Municipality.
Each unit is equivalent to 4 kilometers on the coordinate
plane. If the coordinate of Lorega Health Center is (2, 6)
and Pulog Health Center is (10, 8). What is the shortest
distance between these two health centers?

Managok

Pulog
Kinate
Lorega

Santa Maria
San Rafael

Solution: 1. Let x1 = 2 , y1 = 6 , x2 = 10 and y2 = 8

2. Substitute the corresponding values of x1, y1, x2 and y2 in

the Distance formula d .

d .

3. Simplify the resulting equation.

d or d 8.25 units

Since 1 unit in the coordinate plane is equivalent to 4 units, multiply

the value of d by 4 to get the distance between Pulog Center and Lorega
Health Center.
(8.25) (4) = 33km

The distance between Pulog Health Center and Lorega

Health Center is approximately 33 km.

What is It

The figure below shows that R and S are the endpoints of a line
segment. Point M is called the midpoint of segment . It is the point that is
exactly halfway between the endpoints R (x1, y1) and S (x2, y2). Thus, the
midpoint M is given by the formula
M= , .

The x-coordinate of M is the average of the x-coordinates of R and S,

while the y-coordinate of M is the average of the y-coordinates of R and S.
y
S (x2, y2)

M= ,

R (x1, y1)

Example 1: The coordinates of the endpoints of are (1, -6) and (9, 5)
respectively. What are the coordinates of its midpoint M?

23
Solution: Let x1 = 1, y1 = -6, x2 = 9 and y2 = 5
Substitute these values into the midpoint formula

M= ,

= 5,

The coordinates of the midpoint of are 5, .

Example 2: If Q (3, 6) is the midpoint of , and one endpoint R has

coordinates (-2, 7), find the coordinates of the other point P.
Solution: Let x = 3, y = 6, x1 = -2 and y1 = 7
Substitute these values into the midpoint formula

(x, y) = ,

(3, -6) = ,

Equate the coordinates, then simplify.

x= y=

3= -6 =

6 = -2 + x2 -12 = 7+ y2
x2 = 8 y2 = -19

The coordinates of the other endpoint P are (8, -19).

Summary

Distance Formula is an equation that can be used to find the distance

between any pair of points on the coordinate plane. It is given by the formula

d or PQ ,

if P(x1, y1) and Q(x2, y2) are the points on the coordinate plane. Furthermore,
the horizontal distance between two points can be used to find the distance
between a pair of points on the coordinate plane and its value is the absolute
value of the difference of the x-coordinates of two points. Similarly, the
vertical distance between two points can be determine by getting the absolute
value of the difference of they-coordinates of two points.

On the other hand, a midpoint is a point on the line segment and

divides the same segment into two equal parts. Thus, in segment AC if point
B is the midpoint then segment AB = BC. In the coordinate plane, a formula
can be used to find the coordinates of the midpoint of a line segment. The
midpoint denoted by M with points P(x1, y1) and Q(x2, y2) is given by the
equation,
M= , .
