Role of Music and Movement
Role of Music and Movement
Music is very essential part of the culture. Most of our activities everyday in our
lives involves music that is why parents use music instinctively to express joy and to
keep children engaged in activities or keeping them calm. Research show that exposure
of children to music help them to speak more clearly, progress more in their
vocabularies and develop their social and emotional skills. Howard Gardner in his
Multiple Intelligences argued that music intelligence is as importance as logical and
emotional intelligence. Music helps to strengthen connection between the body and the
brain among children together as stream. Dancing and moving with music enhance their
motor skills while singing help children to practice their singing voice. Hence, children’s
exposure to music contributes to the developmental process to learn about sounds and
words.
Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute found out that experiences
with music in childhood can actually accelerate child’s brain development specifically
language acquisition and reading skills. It was also find out that music education and
exposure also contribute to the academic achievement of children as well as it also
ignites all areas of child development such as socio-emotional, cognitive aspects, gross
and fine motor skills and other skills in preparation for school endeavour of the children.
In addition, music also allows children to learn sounds and practice self-expression and
strengthen memory skills.
Children regardless of their ages respond through music. Infants, toddlers and
pre-schoolers move their hands, make up songs and sings while playing respectively.
These are indicators that children at all ages use music to share their feelings. Activities
which involve music provide pleasurable and meaningful experiences for children.
Even before the infants be able to understand words, infants can already
recognize melody of the songs. Soft music can put the child into sleep mode while loud
music can stimulate an infant by raising the noise level of his activities.
Toddlers love to move and enjoy dancing. In order to encourage language and
memorization, music is one way to be able them to repeat what have heard. Silly and
funny songs make toddlers happy while clapping hands and tapping objects help
children to reproduce rhythm.
Most young school-age children are fond of music which involves counting,
spelling or remembering sequence of events. They are also capable of expressing their
likes and dislikes of different type of music and can express an interest in music
education.
ANALYSIS:
There are many studies which investigated the importance of music in early
childhood development. One of the findings of investigations conduct are the two facts
that are widely accepted. First, the years after birth to age of six is the most crucial
period n child’s musical development and children do not express music in the same
way as adults. According to the researches, it is in the early years of children where
they learn to unscrambled the tones of music and be able to establish a mental
organization system to memorize the music. Like language development, it is through
imitating and memorizing rhythms and tones by clapping to a beat or singing in tune.
Through these abilities, children are able to develop musical skills. Though developing
musical skills can be influenced in a positive or negative manner Stimulation is
importance as exposure to music or any musical play because it ignites the potentials of
children into musical growth. On the other hand, when a parents are not musically
inclined or do not have adequate exposure to music, children have the tendencies to
influenced hem negatively.
