Music plays an important role in child development. It helps children develop language, memory, social skills and other abilities. LESSON 1- ROLES OF MUSIC AND MOVEMENTS


INTRODUCTION:

Music is very essential part of the culture. Most of our activities everyday in our
lives involves music that is why parents use music instinctively to express joy and to
keep children engaged in activities or keeping them calm. Research show that exposure
of children to music help them to speak more clearly, progress more in their
vocabularies and develop their social and emotional skills. Howard Gardner in his
Multiple Intelligences argued that music intelligence is as importance as logical and
emotional intelligence. Music helps to strengthen connection between the body and the
brain among children together as stream. Dancing and moving with music enhance their
motor skills while singing help children to practice their singing voice. Hence, children’s
exposure to music contributes to the developmental process to learn about sounds and
words.

Parents Roles in Musical Education

In expanding the musical horizon of children, parents play an important part. It


has been proven from many researches that children whose families are music oriented
are considerably progressed in musical behaviour. Further research from the studies of
Kelly and Sutton- Smith explains that rich musical environments at home promotes a
child’s exposure to music and improves the music ability of the children. Other
researches also indicate that it is not only the bonding between parents and child is
being strengthen whenever they play music together but music became a tool that
contributes to the growth and development of the children and helps the family to spend
quality time and have fun together.

Music an the Brain

Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute found out that experiences
with music in childhood can actually accelerate child’s brain development specifically
language acquisition and reading skills. It was also find out that music education and
exposure also contribute to the academic achievement of children as well as it also
ignites all areas of child development such as socio-emotional, cognitive aspects, gross
and fine motor skills and other skills in preparation for school endeavour of the children.
In addition, music also allows children to learn sounds and practice self-expression and
strengthen memory skills.

Music and Children at All ages

Children regardless of their ages respond through music. Infants, toddlers and
pre-schoolers move their hands, make up songs and sings while playing respectively.
These are indicators that children at all ages use music to share their feelings. Activities
which involve music provide pleasurable and meaningful experiences for children.

Infants and Music:

Even before the infants be able to understand words, infants can already
recognize melody of the songs. Soft music can put the child into sleep mode while loud
music can stimulate an infant by raising the noise level of his activities.

Toddlers and Music:

Toddlers love to move and enjoy dancing. In order to encourage language and
memorization, music is one way to be able them to repeat what have heard. Silly and
funny songs make toddlers happy while clapping hands and tapping objects help
children to reproduce rhythm.

Pre-schoolers and Music:


Singing makes children enjoy. They do not mind if they possess the ability of self-
conscious or having a great voice. They just like to sing nursery songs, repeat words
and melodies, and use rhythm with specific beat.

School- age Children and Music:

Most young school-age children are fond of music which involves counting,
spelling or remembering sequence of events. They are also capable of expressing their
likes and dislikes of different type of music and can express an interest in music
education.

The Effects of Music on Childhood Development


Music gives a wonderful feeling to children. Those who might have difficulty in
establishing relationship with others that compromises their skills and encounter
difficulties in participating in a group activity because they are shy, have limited ability to
express themselves are encourage to join when there is music involve in the activity.
This is because music activates subsystem of the brain including structures which are
involved in motivation and emotion. This allows effective creating of bonds between
individuals and in a group. Music also contributes to the well-being throughout one’s
lifespan.
Furthermore, parents can use techniques and musical activities from Merry
Gordon to enhance their child’s development.
● Introduce musical instruments such as egg shakers, maracas, and bells as
young as they are.
● Allow young children move their bodies when listening to music.
● Make associations between songs and activities, such as “Clean Up.”
● Use well-known songs to work on vocabulary and memory by singing, for
example,
● Use songs and sing-song voices to tell stories and to ease transitions into new
activities, such as nap-time and snack-time.
● Help your child take turns with a partner playing and imitating patterns on an
instrument.
● Group of children into small group and allow them to sit in a circle and assign
each one an instrument or a sound. Each child gets a turn being the leader and
the rest of the group in playing together with a certain speed, volume, or rhythm.
The most important aspect of music to enhance development among children is through
providing children with a focused attention. Keeping engaged with music help children
to possess self-perception that provides positive, rewarding learning experience.

Benefits of Music to Children


Children as they grow are needed to be exposed to music and songs which may
play an important role in their development. There are some benefits of music to
children:
1. Music helps children to improve their brainpower
2. Music helps them develop social skills
3. Music helps them build their confidence
4. Music inspires creativity
5. Music teaches them patience
6. Music is a great form of expression
7. Music teaches them discipline

ANALYSIS:

There are many studies which investigated the importance of music in early
childhood development. One of the findings of investigations conduct are the two facts
that are widely accepted. First, the years after birth to age of six is the most crucial
period n child’s musical development and children do not express music in the same
way as adults. According to the researches, it is in the early years of children where
they learn to unscrambled the tones of music and be able to establish a mental
organization system to memorize the music. Like language development, it is through
imitating and memorizing rhythms and tones by clapping to a beat or singing in tune.
Through these abilities, children are able to develop musical skills. Though developing
musical skills can be influenced in a positive or negative manner Stimulation is
importance as exposure to music or any musical play because it ignites the potentials of
children into musical growth. On the other hand, when a parents are not musically
inclined or do not have adequate exposure to music, children have the tendencies to
influenced hem negatively.
