THE EFFECTS OF MOBILE GAMES AND THE STUDENT’S ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCES AMONG GRADE 9 STUDENTS OF NEW ILANG ACHIEVERS

ACADEMY INCORPORATED

CHAPTER 1

I.INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Mobile Games contribute to active learning, creative thinking and concentration.

The game may also provide the means to acquire new knowledge and problem-solving
skills (Ricci et al, 1996). Parents and Guardians increasingly notice that students' use of
mobile gaming has an impact on their academic achievement.Mobile games are very
popular today in this modern era. Students nowadays are very prone to the gigantic
influence of technology. They have most of the major portion on Mobile gaming rather
than their school performance or academic matters. Knowing that there is a huge
scratch to academic performance when you become addictive on using technology,
epidemics are continuously touching students by one(Rodica&Talania,2019)

There has been research in Indonesia about the influence of Mobile gaming on
academic attainment (Harahap & Ramadan, 2021; Kurnada & Iskandar, 2021; Turner et
al., 2018) which demonstrates that online/Mobile gaming users will not receive harmful
influence as long as they play with the suggested timespan. Additionally, online/mobile
games are supposed to benefit language acquisition, although their effect on academic
accomplishment requires additional research. However, a number of other researchers,
such as Adžić et al. (2021) and Islam et al. (2020), presented important facts based on
their research. They report that less successful students have lower grades as a result
of their habit of playing online games, whereas excellent students maintain high scores
despite spending the same amount of time playing. In other words, online gaming has
no significant effect on students' academic performance. Moreover, they suggest that
time management while playing is very influential in determining students' academic
success. In the study fromPalahanan National High School, San Juan, Batangas ,Mobile
gaming brings negative impacts on students' academic performance. Despite this, it is
proven that mobile games have the potential to increase participation of students. This
can be done through applying this activity in the learning process inside the
classroom(Canarias,2019).Upon the conducted study in Lupon Vocational High School
Lupon, Davao Oriental, it has been identified that most of the mobile gamers play mobile
games every day and because of playing mobile games every day the student’s
academic performance is affected. The students may have less time spent in studying
and more time playing mobile games, this means that it can lead to distraction of
his/her classes and it can cause them to attain low or average grades depending on the
capability of time management of the student. Moreover, because the students are
engaged too much in mobile gaming, they will find it hard to quit
playing(Conte,Cabusao&Bagay,2018).

The idea that playing mobile games can supply something that no one else can is,
without a doubt, questionable. According to studies, employing technology is one of the
reasons why the human brain is easily destroyed. In order to keep things relevant for
the current generation, the educational system has a tendency to follow the current of
society's ongoing development. The negative aspects of playing online games became
a topic of discussion in the classroom and throughout the entire Education Department.
Hence, the purpose of this study is to ascertain how playing mobile games affects
students' academic performance.

games on the academic performance of the New Ilang Achievers Academy

their conceptual understanding. For the Teachers, this is convenient for the teachers
Using games in a lesson as part of teaching and learning helps to create a positivity
around the lesson, motivating students with their participation and creating a positive
attitude towards learning. For the School Administrators, the result of the study will also
be helpful to administration as it can be used in developing a framework for the
program which needs implementation involving the grade - 9 students of NIAA and
realizing their essential role in supporting the academic performance of each grade - 9
student for keeping aware and well-informed about the impact of online game to their
academic performance. The Researcher, they shall be benefited as well because they

a resource for supplementary information and ideas for researchers to be conducted in
the future.
