Shot circuits, testing ‘TABLES 2. Bus system parameters. GENERAL This secton describes the principal parts othe electrical system ‘Also covered here are basic electrical system troubleshooting tip, Seo also: +121 Battery, Starter, Alternator + ECL Electrical Component Locations for common BMW ‘acroryms as well as component location information + ELE Electrical Wiring Diagrams + OBD On-Board Diagnostics Electrical overview ‘The vehicle operates on @ 12-volt direct current (DC) negative: ‘ground system, Power is supplied bya lead-acid battery inright side Of tho trunk or eargo compartment {A voltage reguiator controls system voltage at approximately 12 volts. Allcircuits are grounded by direct er ndireci connection fo the negative (-) terminal of tho battary. ‘Anumber of ground connections throughout he vehicle connectthe ‘wring harness to chassis ground. These circuits are completed by the bettery cable or ground strap betwoen the body and the battery negatve (-) terminal 600-2 Electrical System-General Bus basics {diet the extensive use ofauminum in& Sores frontend componenis, rounding feads are used 1 elctcaly bndge Dacy ‘components to each other. Fuses aro color coded to indicate current capacities Electrical components connect using one of the following: * Heavy cables with ug-type comrectors (battery, starter. alternator + Electrical harnessas with keyed, push-cn connectors that lock into place. + Buses with modular connectors. Relays anc contro! modules are mounted in various places ‘hroughout the vehicle. Sco ECL Electrical Component Locations. Bus basics Tohandle electrical comploxity, § Series vehicles are equippee ‘extensively with bus systems. Signals are shared digitally among electrical components on a bus, eliminating the need for separate connections for each pair of compenents. The use of bus ‘communication for controls and accessores reduces witing ‘complexity and improves system response time. Daia transfer over a bus is similar toa telephone conference. A ‘Component on the bus transmits a stream of data (data telegrams) which other components receive at tho came time, Each component is then free to use or ignore ths telegram, ‘The benelis of the bus method of data transter are as follows: '*As data and programs are moditied and extended, only softwere ‘modifications are necessary, * Continuous ventication of transmitted data leads to low error rate + Sensors and signal wires can be simpitied or eliminated due tothe transmittal of mutiplexed digital data, + Control modules transfer dala at a high rate. * Control module sizes and connector sizes aro smaller. ‘+ Bus architecture contorms to international standards. This facilitates data intorchange between components of different manufacture. Electrical test equipment Many electrical tesis described in this manual eal for measuring voltage, current or resistance using a digital multimeter. A digital ‘meters preferred for precise measurements and for electronics work because 1 generally more accurate than an analog meter (swing-needie). An analog meter may draw enough current to ‘damage sensitive electronic components. ‘An LED test lights a safe, inexpensive tool that can be used to perform many simple electrical toste that would otherwise require & digital multimeter. The LED indicates when votiage is present between any two test-points in a circuit. Tho integrated safety, comfort, socurity and handing systems on 5 Series vehicles are designed with sel-ciagnostc capabilties. The Electrical System-General 600-3 Static damage prevention ‘quickest way to diagnose many problems isto start wih a scan tool ‘read-out of clagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). See Scan tool basies fn this repair group. Static damage prevention Erectroriccircuits can be easly damaged by static electicty held by the human body and vehiclo electrical compononts, To avoid static ‘electricity damage, take precautions to ground the static electricity before touching ary internal components ofa circut < Wearing an electrostatic discharge (ESD) mist strap or working on an ani-static mat prevens static electiity damage 4. See warnings and cautions in721 Airbag System (SRS) * The igniton system operates at ‘otha! voltages. Ifyou havo a weak heart or wear a pacemaker, do not expose yourself 0 ‘gnitin system electric currents. Take extra precautions when working on tho ignition system or when sorvicing the engine while 11s rurming or the key 's ON. See 120 Ignition System for Adidonal ignition system warnings and cautions. + Keep hanas, efoining and other objects clear ofthe electric, engine coaling fan vinen working on a warm engine, The fan may Start at any time, even when the gniion is switched OFF 600-4 Electrical System—General Wamings and Cautions CAUTION— - + Do not disconnect the battory with the engine running. + Priorto disconnecting the battery, read the battery disconnection cautions given in 001 Warnings and Cautions. + Switch the ignition OFF and remove the negative battery cable botore removing any eloctiical components.
