Techniques in Carrying and Transporting a Victim of Unintentional Injuries:

ONE-MAN CARRY

1. Ankle Pull is the fastest method for moving a victim a short distance
over but not the patient's preferred method.
 Hold the victim on ankles or pants.
 Pull with your legs, with your back as straight as possible.
 Keep pulling on a straight line as possible.
 Watch over the head for a possible bounce on an uneven
surface.

2. One-person Lift/ Lovers Carry - this method is suitable for children or

very light people.
 Put your arms under the victim’s knees and around their back.

3. Firefighter Carry- it is used to carry a victim in longer distances.

Positioning the victim demands a very able rescuer or someone's assistance.
 The victim is placed over one shoulder.
 Wrap one arm across the victim's legs and grip the victim's opposite
arm.

4. Blanket Pull- this is an ideal way of pulling a victim.

 Position the victim on a blanket with a head 2ft. from one corner of
the blanket.
 Wrap the blanket corners around the victim.
 Pull with your legs, with your back as straight as possible.
 Keep pulling on a straight line as possible.

5. Pack-strap Carry- this is usually done to carry the victim over longer
distances.
 Place both victim’s arms over your shoulders.
 Cross the victim's arms, holding the wrists with arms close to your
chest.
 Balance load with your hips and support the victim with your legs.

TWO-PERSON CARRY
6. Human Crutch/Two-person Drag- in this method, conscious victims can
use rescuers as crutches in swinging their legs. For unconscious victims,
this method moves the victim out of immediate danger quickly and easily.
 With the victim on the ground, rescuers stand on either side of the
victim’s chest.

4
 The rescuer's hand nearest the feet grabs the victim's wrist on their
side of the victim while the other hand grasps the shoulder's clothing
nearest them.
 Put the victim in a sitting position by pulling and lifting the victim’s
arms.
 The conscious victim stands with rescuers’ assistance and rescuers’
hands around the victim’s waist.
 For the unconscious victim, rescuers will hold the belt or waistband of
the victim’s clothing.
 The rescuers will squat down, placing the victim’s arms over their
shoulders and ending up facing the same direction as the victim’s.
 They stand with the victim and move out using their legs, dragging the
victim's legs behind.

7. Two-handed Seat- it is usually used for transporting unconscious

victims in long distances.
 Both rescuers squat down on either side of the victim and reach under
the victim's shoulders and knees.
 Rescuers grasp each other's wrists and stand with proper lifting
techniques.
 Walk in the direction where the victim is facing.

8. Chair Carry is used to carrying victims up and down the stairs or

through narrow or uneven areas, using a sturdy chair with no wheels.
 Have the victim sit on the chair.
 The rescuer positioned on the victim's head holds the chair with
palms. He/she then tilts the chair.
 On short distances or stairwells, the second rescuer faces in and
holds the chair legs.
 The second rescuer separated the victim's legs, his/her back into
the chair, and both rescuers stand using their legs on longer
distances.

THREE-MAN CARRY
9. Hammock Carry- three or more rescuers alternately position themselves
on both sides of the victim, with the strongest rescuer on the side with fewer
rescuers.
 Rescuers reach under the victim and grasp one wrist of the opposite
rescuer. Rescuers on the ends will only grasp one wrist of the opposite
rescuer.
 Rescuers at the ends will use their free hand to support the victim’s
head and feet/legs.
 Rescuers will then squat and lift the victim using proper lifting
techniques.

5
10. Three-person Carry or Stretcher Lift - used to lift victims on a bed or
stretcher and transport them in short distances.
 All rescuers will kneel on the knee nearest to the victim’s feet.
 The rescuer at the head of the victim will signal the two others to lift
the victim up and rest the victim on their lifted knees.

Think of a situation when to use the following ways of carrying and

transporting the victim.
1. One-man Carry, Two-person Carry, and Three-man Carry.
