I. Objectives
Content Standard: The relationship between the visible constellation in the sky and Earth’s
position along its orbit.
Performance Standard: Discuss whether or not popular beliefs and practices with regard to
constellations and astrology have a scientific basis.
Learning Competencies: Show which constellations may be observed at different times of
the year using models.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to;


1. Infer the characteristics of stars based on the characteristics of the sun,
2. Explain what constellations are and how they are formed,
3. Identify different constellations and explain their significance, and
4. Demonstrate how to observe and track the movement of constellations
over time using models.

II. Subject Matter:


a. Topic: Constellation: Patterns in the Sky
b. Reference: Learner’s Material pages/SLM
Science 9 Quarter 3 – Module 5 pp. 1-20
c. Materials:
For the teacher:
 Smart TV (PowerPoint Presentation)
 Laptop
 Printed Media
d. Time Allotment: 60 minutes

III. Lesson Procedure:

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Classroom standards
4. Checking of Attendance
5. Review

B. Motivation

 The teacher will conduct a short activity to engage students’ participation. The
activity is entitled “READ ME”. The class will be divided into two; each
group should have a leader. The leader will do the actions of the given word,
and the group mates will guess the word.

C. Presentation

 Ask students what they know about constellations.


 Show them pictures of different constellations and ask them to identify them.
 Explain that constellations are groups of stars that form patterns in the sky.
D. Discussion

 Introduce what is a star and its characteristics.


 Identify and explain the different types of constellations.
 Explain how constellations are formed and why they appear to move across
the sky.
 Demonstrate how to observe and track the movement of constellations over
time using models.

E. Application
“Poster Making”

What you need:


Bond paper, pencil, crayons

What to do:
1. Do your favorite star pattern or constellations.
2. The pupils present their output and tell why this was their favorite
constellation.

Guide questions:
You learned more about constellations, and you viewed.
1. What is your favorite star patterns or constellations? Why?

F. Evaluation

Direction: On the blank, write:


S – if statement A is true and statement B is false;
T – if statement B is true and statement A is false;
A – if statements A and B are both true; and
R – if statements A and B are both false.

1. A) Constellations are groups of stars that form distinct patterns in the sky.
B) Constellations can be seen only at night.

2. A) Little Dipper and Big Dipper are also considered as constellations.


B) Little Dipper is found with Ursa Minor.

3. A) Polaris is also known as the South Star


B) Polaris is located in Ursa Major.

4. A) The Cassiopeia constellation forms a letter W on the sky.


B) The Orion constellation is referred to as the hunter.

5. A) When the stars are hidden by clouds, there is a great possibility of rainfall.
B) Navigators use Polaris as their guide in determining directions.
G. Assignment

Observe the night sky at home and track the movement of constellations over time.
