10. A ladder 15 m long leans against the wall. The ladder slides down the wall at a rate of
1.5 m/s. What is the rate of change of the angle at the ground when the ladder is 6 m
from the wall? (3 marks)
11. The position of a particle as it moves horizontally is described by the given equation
s =sint −cost 0 ˝ t ˝2˜ . If s is the displacement in metres and t is the time in seconds,
find the maximum and minimum displacements. (3 marks)
12. Show that a rectangle with given perimeter has maximum area when it is a square. (3
marks)
13. Choose any 5 of the following problems to complete. Solve the problem by following the
procedure for solving an optimization problem. Show all your steps. (4 marks each x 5)
a. A farmer has 1800 m of fencing to make two equal rectangular pens that share
a common side. Determine the dimensions of each pen so that the area is a
maximum.
b. New Horizons Travel advertises a package plan for a Florida vacation. The fare
for the flight is $400/person plus $8/person for each unsold seat on the plane. The
plane holds 120 passengers and the flight will be cancelled if there are fewer than
50 passengers. What number of passengers will maximize revenue?
c. An open-topped storage box with a square base has a capacity of 5 m3. The
material for the sides cost $1.60/m2, while the material for the bottom costs $2.00/
m2. Find the dimensions that will minimize the cost of making the box.
d. The perimeter of an isosceles triangle is 38 m. Find the length of the sides of the
triangle of maximum area.

e. An apple orchard now has 80 trees per hectare and the average yield is 400 apples
per tree. For each additional tree planted per hectare the average yield per tree
is reduced by approximately four apples. How many trees per hectare will give the
largest crop of apples?
f. An isolated farm house is located on the bank of a straight canal that is 200 m wide.
Electric power for the house must come from a power station on the opposite side
of the canal, 500 m downstream. If it cost twice as much to lay cable underwater as
it does to lay cable on land, what path should be chosen to minimize the cost?
g. A rectangular wooden chest is twice as long as it is wide. The top and sides of the
chest are made of oak and the bottom is made of pine. The volume of the box is
0.25 cubic metres. The oak costs $2/m2 and the pine is $1/m2. Find the dimensions
that will minimize the cost of making the chest.
i. A showroom for a car dealership is to be built in the shape of a rectangle with brick
on the back and side and glass on the front. The floor of the showroom is to have an
area of 500 m2. A brick wall costs $1200/m and a glass wall cost $600/m. The height
of the showroom is preset and included in the price of the wall. What dimensions
would minimize the cost of the showroom?
