INTRODUCTION
A. PROGRAMS
1. AN EMERGENCY POLIO VACCINATION PROGRAM
This is an emergency program that was launched on 21 march, 2022. The campaign was launched
after Malawi registered first polio case in 30 years and it target nearly 3 million under five children.
WHO, UNICE and other global polio eradication initiatives- Gavi, Bill and Melinda gates
foundation centers for disease control and prevention are supporting ministry of health to do the
vaccination.
The program aims to reduce poverty and ensure food security at household and national levels by
increasing access to farm inputs. The program has a budget of MWK 160 billion ($199.2 million).
The program is funded by Malawi government by paying 70% cost of the inputs and the program
is national wide.
A new assessment of Malawi’s food systems led by the food and agriculture organization (FAO),
the government of Malawi, the centre international de recherché agronomique pour le developpent
(CIRAD) and European union (EU) is underway with an aim of identifying blockages and areas
for growth to improve food and nutrition security as well as contribute to sustainable employment
and livelihoods and to building a sustainable planet. The program has open budget.
4. FINANCIAL ACCESS FOR RURAL MARKET, SMALLHOLDERS AND
ENTERPRISE PROGRAM (FARMSE)
This is national wide program that aims to support household economic development through
access to financial service that are appropriate to each socio-economic level of poverty. This will
include social payment graduation programs, community-based financial organizations, financial
cooperatives, microfinance institutions and commercial banks. The program is expected to benefit
about 430000 people, of which an estimated 30 percent will be women and at least 20 percent will
be young people. The program was approved on 11st December, 2017 and its duration 2017-2025
and the total program budget is $58million. It supported by international fund for agriculture
development (IFAD) and some co-financiers; national government and local private sector
5. SCALING UP NUTRITION
The SUN 3.0 campaign which was launched aims at eliminating all forms of malnutrition with the
emphasis on stunting and overweight through; intense social behavior change and communication,
promotion of nutrient dense diversified diets and healthy lifestyle. The program has a total cost of
nutrition plans over seven years is approximately $561 million, averaging $80 million per year.
B. PROJECTS
1. THE LILONGWE WATER AND SANITATION PROJECT
This is private-public partnership with the world bank group and Malawi government. The project
is supported by world bank group. According to the world bank group, the project is meant to
remove bottlenecks and improve the quality of water production for Lilongwe city. Currently the
cost of the sits around $102 million and the project is set to finished on June 30, 2023. The new
pipelines and systems will increase water access to 10 different schools as well as 10 outdoor
markets and will support the construction of 8,000new sewer systems across the city.
This another world bank group project, aiming to grow agricultural production in shire valley area,
where food production and profitable income are severely lacking. The total cost of the program
is projected to reach $ 234.5 million, but currently only around $160 million has been committed
to it. The focus of this program in Malawi is to work towards growing infrastructure and food
production through increased irrigation and management and allocation of natural resources for
each household. The hope is that with increased access to irrigation and natural land resources,
more households will be able to earn a steady income and lessen the food desert issue in the area
The project aims to enhance rural Malawian communities’ resilience to food insecurity and the
adverse effects of climate change by developing climate-smart land and water management
systems for small-scale farmers engaged in rain fed agriculture and cultivating on irrigated land.
17,500 smallholder households particularly those of women and young people, will benefit from
the project. The project is supported by international fund for agriculture development and total
cost is $83.95 million. It was approved on 17 December, 2015 and its duration is 2015-2024.
This project concentrate on enhancing agricultural productivity and improving rural food security
through simple, affordable technologies, which will help smallholder farmers bridge the wide gap
between actual and possible food-crop yields in Malawi. The areas are Lilongwe, Chitipa, Balaka,
Chiradzulu, Nkhotakota and Blantyre. The project duration is 2011-2023 and it has total budget of
$73.22 million and it is funded by the national government and international fund for agriculture
development
5. Hunger project
This is a nonprofit organization focused ending hunger. Their work in Malawi is the Epicenter
strategy, where the center of the community, or major city is the major supplier of resources to the
country and an epicenter can make all the difference in the way a community grows. Total annul
al budget of the program is estimated at MWK 147 million ($ 597 million). The project raises its
funds through contribution in USA, UK, japan, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia,
Germany, Canada and Netherlands. The project has been working in Malawi since 1999 and is
currently empowering 12 epicenter areas and cumulatively the epicenters serve the population of
183, 559 in 304 villages.
CONCLUNSION
In nut shell, in Malawi there several project and programs that were implemented and some are
about to be implemented, the above mentioned projects and programs are still working on to
achieve their objectives.
