MATHEMATICS 6
QUARTER 1 (WEEK 2)
ACTIVITY NO: 1
MULTIPLYING SIMPLE FRACTIONS AND MIXED FRACTIONS.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
To MULTIPLY fractions:
1. Multiply the numerators.
2. Multiply the denominators.
3. Simplify or write the product in lowest term, if possible.
Example:
X =
Multiply the numerators 1 x 2 =2
1 2 2 Multiply the denominators 3 x 5 = 15
1. 3 x 5 = 15 Reduce the product whenever possible.
X =
Look for the GCF of any of the numerator
and denominator. Simplify by cancellation.
4 5
2. 10 x 8
GCF of 4 and 8 is 4; 4 ÷ 4=1, 8 ÷ 4 = 2
GCF of 5 and 10 is 5; 5 ÷ 5 = 1, 10 ÷ 5 = 2
1 1 Multiply the numerators 1 x 1 = 1
Multiply the denominators 2 x 2 = 4
4 x5
10 x 8 = 1
4
Convert mixed numbers into improper
Reduce the product whenever possible.
fractions.
1 6 x 3+1 19 2 5 x 4 +2 22
2 2 6 = =¿ 4 = =¿
3 3 3 5 5 5
Multiply the numerators 19 x 22 = 418
Multiply the denominators 3 x 5 = 15
If the answer is an improper fraction, divide
1 2
3. 6 3 x4 5
19 x 22 418
3x5 = 15
13
= 27 15
