Low Speed Flow Over Circular Cylinder: Group G4 AE 312 Aerodynamics Laboratory Department of Aerospace Engineering

This document summarizes an experiment on low speed flow over a circular cylinder. The objectives were to measure surface pressure distribution, compute drag, find velocity profiles in the wake, and determine separation points. Key results included a drag coefficient of 0.934536 averaged from momentum balance in the wake. Pressure distribution agreed with theory, showing separation around 78 and 275 degrees. Comparison to literature showed good agreement on pressure distribution and separation points.

Cylinder
INTRO TO THEORY

Moving past inviscid, full potential theory estimates

and analysing viscous, separated and wake regions.
Objectives
1. Measure the surface pressure distribution of the cylinder at tunnel speed of 17 m/s.
2. Compute the Form (Pressure) Drag
3. Find velocity profile in the wake region and compute the Total Drag using x-momentum
balance
4. Find out the separation points
5. Compute approximate value of Skin Friction Drag
Variation of Drag
over cylinder with
Re

At Re = 200,000, drag sharply reduces due to the

attached boundary layer becoming turbulent.
This causes later separation, weaker vortices,
less base suction, and reduced drag. This is
known as Drag Crisis

Coefficients

Variation of Drag coefficient with Reynolds number

RESULTS - Wake Profile
At a particular Reynolds
number, and a particular
location of x/d, we
analyse the velocity
profile in the wake region
(behind the cylinder)

Calculating total Drag we get,

Cd (avg) = 0.934536

Theoretical wake
behind the cylinder
RESULTS - Cp and Pressure Drag

Comparing the Cp plots, we can clearly see the

separation region where Cp is nearly constant.
Using this plot we can calculate the required Cd,p Separation Points at:
and the separation points. θ = 78°, 275°
Stagnation Point at: (As per theory too)
θ = 0°
Cd,p = 0.5*∑Cp cosθ Δθ = 0.896592536
Cd,friction = Cd - Cd,p = 0.037943464
Comparison with Literature - Variation of Cp

Comparison of Cp Distribution

The calculated and published results of pressure

distribution are observed to
be fairly consistent. The values exactly don’t
match because of the difference
Variation of Cp in literature
in Re and cylinder diameter in the two cases.
Comparison with Literature - Flow separation

Flow separation in experiment Flow separation in literature

From the above figures we can say, the separation points for both calculated and
published results in the subcritical regime are almost the same.
