This document provides examples and problems involving the normal distribution. It covers calculating probabilities and finding values using the standard normal distribution table. Some examples involve finding probabilities for random variables that are normally distributed with given means and standard deviations. The problems ask the reader to calculate probabilities that a random variable falls within or outside of given ranges.

Statistics FIS1031 Tutorial 11: Normal Distribution

Tutorial 11: Normal Distribution

Part A: Normal Distribution (Revision)

NOTE: Sketching a Normal bell curve can aid you in finding the correct region of probability.

1. If is a standard normal random variable, find from the table the probabilities of the followings:
(a) > 1.853
(b) < −1.555
~ ,
(c) 0.345 < < 1.751
(d) −1.4 < < −0.60 −
(e) > −2.061 =

2. If is a standard normal random variable, find the value of such that:

(a) ≤ = 0.6198
(b) > = 0.7818
(c) < = 0.198
(d) | | < = 0.3830
(e) | | < = 0.6372

3. If is a normal random variable with mean 84 and variance 12, find:

(a) 80 < < 89
(b) 76 < < 82
(c) 87 < < 93
(d) | − 84| > 2.9
[ Hint: − 84 > 2.9 and − 84 < −2.9 ]

4. If is normally distributed with mean 60 and variance 25, find the values of such that:
(a) > = 0.2324
(b) > = 0.0702
(c) > = 0.837
(d) > = 0.7461

5. is a normal random variable with mean and standard deviation . Find the values of and
if:
(a) > 80 = 0.0113 and > 30 = 0.9713
(b) < 35 = 0.2 and 35 < < 45 = 0.65

6. The marks obtained by students in a Statistics test are normally distributed with mean of 71 and
standard deviation 15. Calculate the probability that a randomly selected student obtained marks
which are
(a) less than 50.
(b) more than 81.
(c) between 62 and 76.
(d) between 70 and 80.

7. The length of houseflies have a normal distribution with mean 1.1 cm and variance 0.09 cm.
Find the probability that the length of a housefly caught at random is
(a) more than 1.18 cm.
(b) less than 0.9 cm.

8. If the lifespan of a particular tyre from a factory are normally distributed with mean 2.0 years
and standard deviation 3 months, find the probability that a tyre randomly selected from the
factory will last
(a) less than 1.5 years.
(b) at least 2.5 years.
(c) between 1.25 years and 1.8 years.
(d) between 1 year 6 months and 2 years 3 months.

9. The incomes of factory workers in a certain area are normally distributed with a mean of RM100
per day and a standard deviation of RM10 per day. Find the proportion of the workers with
incomes
(a) between RM90 and RM110 per day.
(b) between RM80 and RM120 per day.
(c) more than RM125 per day.

10. The mass of mango taken from an orchard is known to be normally distributed with mean 820 g
and standard deviation 100 g.
(a) Find the probability that a mango chosen at random will have a mass of at least 700 g.
(b) In a basket which contains 200 mangoes from the orchard, how many mangoes are
expected to have a mass of at least 700 g?
