This document outlines 5 tutorial problems related to hydrology: 1) Calculating the annual average precipitation for a large catchment comprised of 3 sub-catchments with given annual precipitation amounts and areas. 2) Determining the missing precipitation value at a station that was inoperative during a storm based on readings from surrounding stations. 3) Estimating the missing monthly precipitation value for a gauge that developed a fault based on readings from other gauges and their annual averages. 4) Determining the missing precipitation record at a station that was not functioning during a storm based on readings from other stations and their annual normals. 5) Calculating the mean areal rainfall for a rectangular catchment using both the Th

Tutorial 3 Hydrology (discuss at 3.

30 pm)

1) The average annual prescription for the three sub-catchments constituting a large
catchment is 123.7 cm, 114.3 cm, and 98.6 cm. The area of each sub-catchment are
520 km 2, 350 km 2, and 676 km 2. Calculate the annual average precipitation for the
entire catchment. (Andi)

2) Precipitation station D was inoperative for repair for a month. A storm occurred
during this time. The precipitation recorded during the storm at three surrounding
stations A, B, and C were 15.3 cm, 17.1 cm, and 14.0 cm respectively. The normal
annual precipitation at these stations including station D are 137 cm, 155.7 cm, 128.8
cm, and 136.8 cm respectively. Determine the missing precipitation value at station
D. (Khairul)

3) One of the monthly recorded rain gauges on a particular catchment develops a fault
in a certain month when the other three gauges record precipitation of 37 mm, 43
mm, and 51 mm respectively. If the average annual precipitation amounts of these
three gauges are 726 mm, 752 mm and 840 mm respectively and of the faulty gauge
649 mm, estimate the missing monthly precipitation at this fault gauge. (Lim)

4) The normal annual precipitation for the five gauges are 125 cm, 102 cm, 76 cm, 113
cm, and 137 cm respectively. During a certain storm event, the fifth gauges is not
functioning. The measured rainfalls on the other four gauges are 13.2 cm, 9.2 cm,
6.8 cm, and 10.2 cm respectively. Determine the missing record at the last station
during that storm. (Mary)

5) A catchment area approximated by a rectangle whose ordinates are (0.0), (4.0),

(0.4), and (4.4) is 4 km wide and 4 km long (one-unit coordinate represents 1 km).
Four rain gauges are installed within the area at different locations as shown in the
table below together with recorded rainfall.

Gauge station Coordinate Rainfall

(km, km) (cm)
1 1,1 5.0
2 1,3 10.0

3 3,3 8.0
4 3,1 12.0

Determine the mean areal rainfall by the Thiessen polygon method. Compare the
answer with the arithmetic mean method.
1 cm = 10 mm
1 m = 100 cm = 1000 mm
1 km = 1000 m
