Physical Science Project

The document describes a polarity experiment with 6 set-ups using various liquids and a spoon. The materials needed are listed. The procedure involves preparing 6 glasses with different liquid combinations of water, vinegar, oil and alcohol. The mixtures are stirred and observed to see which mix well and which do not. A table summarizes the results, showing which mixtures are soluble or insoluble and whether they are polar or non-polar.

Activity 1: Polarity Experiment

Materials:
• Water
• Vinegar
• Oil
• Alcohol
 6 disposable glasses
 Spoon
 Food coloring (at least 4 variants)
Procedure:
1. Obtain 6 clean disposable glasses and prepare the following set-up.
Set-up 1: 1 cup water + 5 tablespoons vinegar
Set-up 2: 1 cup water + 5 tablespoons oil
Set-up 3: 1 cup water + 5 tablespoons alcohol
Set-up 4: 1 cup vinegar + 5 tablespoons oil
Set-up 5: 1 cup vinegar + 5 tablespoons alcohol
Set-up 6: 5 tablespoon oil + 5 tablespoons alcohol
2. Thoroughly stir each mixture and observe carefully.

Note:
•Do not forget to wash and dry the spoon after each use.
• Properly label each set-up.
• Samples with oil should first be mixed with dishwashing liquid before disposing of down the sink.

Solubility Polarity
Set-up
(soluble or insoluble?) Polar or non-polar?
1. (water + vinegar) Soluble Polar
2. (water + oil) Insoluble Non- Polar
3. (water + alcohol) Soluble Polar
4. (vinegar + oil) Soluble Polar
5. (vinegar + alcohol) Soluble Polar
6. (oil + alcohol) Insoluble Non- Polar

Guide Question:
a. Which of the following set-ups mixed well? Which did not?
The set-up that was mixed well was the (Water + vinegar), (water and alcohol, (vinegar and oil)
and (vinegar and alcohol) while the set-ups that wasn’t mixed well was (water + oil) and (oil
+alcohol)

b. What can you infer from the result of this activity?

We’ve found that not all the set-ups did mixed well with each
