ABSTRACT
This study examines the the extent of use of audio visual materials in the teaching and learning
of English language in secondary schools in Nsukka local government area of Enugu state.
Based on this premise, research questions were formulated, and the researchers formulated
questionnaire questions which were used for data collection of the study. Four research aims
and four research questions guided the study. Theoretical and practical significance of the study
were discussed. The geographical scope of the study was Nsukka local government area of
Enugu state. The study employed a descriptive survey design. The population of the study was
5,364 secondary school students in the eight secondary schools in the study area. Ten(10)
secondary schools out of the seventeen (17) secondary schools in Nsukka LGA were used in
carrying out the study. Twenty (20) students from each of the ten (10) schools were sampled.
Copies of the questionnaire for study were personally administered to two hundred hundred
(200) respondents through a simple sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection
was structured questionnaire developed by the researchers. The instrument was face validated
by experts from Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu. The data collected for the study were
analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions. In line with the
findings, the result shows that computer/internet, and multimedia are the audio visual materials
available for teaching and learning of Oral English in secondary schools in Nsukka Local
Government Area of Enugu State, while television, virtual Classroom, and film projector, are
unavailable. It also show that students have adapted to the use of audio visual materials, that
students look forward to being taught with audio visual materials, most teachers do not know
how to use them yet, teachers do not use them to teach oral English, and that students
understand oral English better when being taught with audio visual materials. It further
discovered that the challenges faced by secondary schools in using audio visual materials in
teaching and learning of Oral English in secondary schools in Nsukka LGA include: lack of
technical know-how in the use of audio visual materials, there is poor funding which hampers
the purchase of audio-visual resources. The study recommended that English teachers should be
trained and retrained in the use of audio-visual in teaching English language.
