Weekly Reflection 2 Ruels and Routines

This weekly reflection discusses the importance of establishing clear classroom rules and routines when teaching in a practical classroom setting. The author's cooperating teacher provided advice about creating routines for taking out and cleaning up equipment that would become nearly automatic for students with reinforcement. Implementing a cleanup routine where students check a rota for assigned tasks has led to the routine being followed automatically. Research also confirmed that classroom rules promote a safe learning environment when created with student input and reinforced at lessons. To conclude, rules and routines are critical for behavior management and effective teaching and learning, especially in technical classrooms where safety is paramount.

Weekly Critical Reflection 2: Classroom Rules and Routines

This week I completed a second week of school placement. In this reflection the topic I will
be discussing is rules and routines in the classroom. When reflecting on my first two weeks
of placement I feel this is a very important topic especially, when working in a practical
classroom. When speaking to my co-operating teacher this week he informed me of the
importance of have clear and effective classroom rules and routines. This has provided me
with the motivation to research this topic further in this critical reflection.
When researching the topic of classroom routines I have learned how important they are to
establish norms, set expectations and build positive relationships in the classroom
environment (Rouch, 2021). My co-operating teacher gave me great advise when it comes
to creating routines in the classroom, he informed me it will makes teaching in the technical
classrooms a lot easier if you can create a system where the students follow a routine at the
beginning of a lesson to take out their equipment and likewise at the end of a lesson for the
clean-up process. The teacher informed me if this is a routine for the students it will happen
nearly automatically in every class, it might take a little reinforcement but nothing major.
When reflecting on my own practice since I started implementing this strategy it has most
definitely been a positive experience for me as the teacher. When it comes to the clean-up
process after a wood technology lesson I ask the students to check the rota for the task they
will be completing during the clean up process. Since implementing this routine at the end
of last week I already see this becoming a routine for the students as once I tell the students
to start the clean-up process they automatically go to the rota and begin their duty. This is
brilliant for the teacher as it ensures each student is contributing to the clean-up process
and also ensures the room will be left clean and prepared for the next group of students.
When researching the topic of classroom rules I found they are an integral part of every
classroom as they promote a safe leaning environment, effective teaching, effective learning
and produces responsible students (Yussif, 2021). When speaking with my co-operating
teacher about this topic he informed me that classroom rules are even more so important in
technical classrooms which we teach in, this is of course because of the dangerous
equipment in theses classroom. When reflecting on my experience with classroom rules, I
felt the process I used in all my first lessons worked really well. This was allowing the
students time to create a mind map of classroom rules in their pairs, each pair then shared
their rules to the whole class group, this really encouraged the students to think about
classroom rules and health and safety in the classroom. We then added these rules that the
students created along with the teachers rules and created a list of classroom rules which
are reinforced at the beginning of each lesson. I feel this method worked very well as the
students contributed to the creation of the rules and the fact they are reinforced at the
beginning of each lesson reminds the students of the importance of classroom rules.
To conclude classroom rules and routines are a critical part of behaviour management in the
classroom. It promotes effective teaching and learning. Finally classroom rules are also
extremally important in creating a safe learning environment for students.
