How To Design Boost Converter in MATLAB SIMULINK Software

This document discusses how to design a boost converter in MATLAB/Simulink. It begins by defining a boost converter as a DC to DC converter that increases the output voltage above the source voltage. It then discusses three methods for increasing output DC voltage: connecting batteries in series, using an inverter/transformer/rectifier combination, and using a boost converter. The boost converter method is described as the most efficient, cheap, and lightweight option. The document provides parameters for an example boost converter design and discusses open loop and closed loop boost converter systems.

How to Design Boost

Converter in
MATLAB/SIMULINK
Software
By: Dr. J. A. Laghari
Boost Converter
 Def: A boost converter is a DC to DC converter with an output voltage greater
than the source voltage.
Boost Converter
 A boost converter is sometimes called a step-up converter since it "steps up"
the source voltage.
 Power for the boost converter can come from any suitable DC source, such as
batteries, solar panels, rectifiers, and DC generators.
 Since power (P=VI) must be conserved, the output current is lower than the
source current.
Methods to Increase Output DC Voltage
 There are several methods by which output DC voltage can be increased.
 1. By connecting Batteries in series, the output voltage can be increased.
 2. By using inverter, transformer, and rectifier combination, the output DC
voltage can be increased.
 3. By using Boost Converter, the output DC voltage can be increased.
 Method # 1
the output voltage can be increased,
by connecting Batteries in series
Increase Output DC Voltage by Batteries
12 V
Increase Output DC Voltage by Batteries
24 V
Increase Output DC Voltage by Batteries

 Battery power systems often stack cells

in series to achieve higher voltage.
 However, sufficient stacking of cells is
not possible in many high voltage
applications due to lack of space.
 Method # 2
Output DC voltage can be increased, by using
inverter, transformer, and rectifier combination
Method 2: Increase Output DC Voltage
12 V V1 V2 24 V

Inverter Step-Up Rectifier

Transformer
Disadvantages
 This method is very bulky,
 Inefficient,
 Costly.
 Method # 3
Output DC voltage can be
increased by using Boost Converter
Boost Converter Method to Increase Voltage
Advantages
 This method is very efficient having efficiency more than 90%.
 Cheap,
 Light Weighted.
Boost Converter Method to Increase Voltage
 Boost Converter may consists of at least two semiconductors (a diode and a
transistor) and at least one energy storage element: a capacitor, inductor, or
the two in combination.
Duty Cycle
 Def: Duty cycle is the ratio of time a load or circuit is ON compared to the
time the load or circuit is OFF.
 A duty cycle or power cycle is the fraction of one period in which a signal or
system is active.
 Duty cycle, sometimes called "duty
factor," is expressed as a
percentage of ON time. A 60% duty
cycle is a signal that is ON 60% of
the time and OFF the other 40%.
Boost Converter Parameters
Parameter Rated Value
Input Voltage (Vs) 12 V
Output Voltage (Vo) 20 V
Switching Frequency (fs) 25 kHz
Power (P) 100 W
Ripple in Output Voltage (∆V0) 1%
Ripple in Inductor Current (∆IL) 30%
Efficiency 100%
Boost Converter Parameters
Parameter Rated Value
Duty Cycle (D) 0.4
Output Current (Io) 5A
Input & Inductor Current (Is=IL) 8.33 A
Ripple in Inductor Current (∆IL) 2.5 A
Ripple in Output Voltage (∆V0) 0.2 V
Inductor (L) 76.8e-6 H
Capacitor (C) 400e-6 F
Load (R) 4Ω
Pulse Generator Parameters
Parameter Rated Value
Switching Frequency (fs) 25 kHz

Time Period = 1/frequency = 1/25000 = 0.00004 second = 40e-6 s

Pulse Width = % Duty Cycle = 40%
Open Loop Boost Converter
Closed Loop Boost Converter
 In the closed loop system, it is possible to get the output extremely close to
the desired output voltage.
 This closed loop boost converter system is very important topic for the
research.
 Many optimization techniques as well as intelligent techniques can be used
on this topic to complete
 Bachelor degree FYP project,
 Master degree research or
 One of the PhD research objectives.
