Analysis On Lecture Immigration

The document is an analysis of a New York Times article by John Tierney about immigration to the United States. The analysis discusses how Tierney compares the stories of two immigrants and argues that statements saying Mexican immigrants will not integrate are incorrect. While the author of the analysis believes Tierney has a noble cause, they note he relies too heavily on emotion and does not sufficiently back up some of his arguments with data and statistics. The analysis concludes the article effectively informs about immigration issues but the author's conclusion relies too much on their own beliefs.

Analysis on Immigration lecture

The reading for which I decided to do an analysis is called “Angel in America” (New York Times
in April 2006) by John M. Tierney a journalist and writer for the New York Times, to begin with, I
would like to synthesize in a short summary what is the intention of the text, I would also like to
contextualize in order to obtain a broader point of view in this analysis. The text is a reflection of
the author questioning different positions that different people come to present about
immigration to the United States of America. He author begins by comparing two cases of
immigrants who moved to the United States and how each of them has had a different fate.

In his way of seeing things, he believes that there is a bit of a disadvantage towards Latin
American immigrants and specifically when he talks about Mexican immigrants, he says that a
sector in the Government and certain groups of people in the society argue that Mexicans will
become an isolated group in where violence and language barriers predominate, then the author
focuses on proving that these statements are incorrect, arguing with data about how Mexican
immigrants adapt to the United States and how new generations of mexican-americans adapt to a
whole new world of opportunities in another country than the one where their parents originally
are.
I think the author has a noble cause because he tries to make readers emphasize this social
problem, but in the same way I think it is very important to take into account the other aspects
that are part of the text becausee there are different factors that we must analyze to determine the
validity of the arguments that John presents to convince us of his point of view.
I think the author appeals too much to the use of emotions to connect with the reader and thus
achieve empathy and make the audience to coincide with his point of view, which is incorrect
because in certain parts the text doesnt feel objective with the subject in matter and it also

ignores certain factors to think about; Factors that can determine the validity of their arguments
for example:
He talks about the fact that most of the cases of Mexicans are similar because they leave school
at an early age due to the need for money and medical needs, a paragraph later he begins to talk
about how Espinoza started with a very low salary and began to rise little by little. little and
move on to other better works, at first glance these arguments seem to be valid and important for
Tierney but despite that the author should have been a little more objective using more tangible
examples and statistics to prove his point.

At the same time, I think that the author nailed it in some parts of the text and one of them is that
it gives us a context about another case of an immigrant case so we as readers can compare the
different cases that exist and thelps us to understand how it is that the Government decided to
deal with it, Thanks to this, readers can have a better understanding of this topic and not simply
lock themselves in an isolated case like Ángel Espinosa’s case, it helps us to clearly see the
differences between the two stuations, which helps to reinforce the validity of this text.

In the third analysis point, I would like to mention that the conclusion that the author presents to
us seemed a bit weak because, he again superimposes his emotions on the text saying that
Republicans are not capable of understanding that we are all worth the same, but he says it in a
ironic tone; resource on which he should not have relied, much less to finish his text.

As a conclusion, I would like to add that I believe that this text has a good intention which is to
inform society about a problem that alot of people still ignore, most of the text contains well-
founded arguments with real and verified data, these arguments gives support to the author's
thesis they give validity to it but at certain points in the reading Tierney abuses the use of
emotions to empathize with his readers I think he should be more careful In this point because
recurring so constantly to the use of emotions to validate an argument is incorrect because it is
easier to begin to ignore important facts that must be taken into account to judge the validity of a
text,I found the text quite good because it fulfills its main function, but the author's conclusion
was limited to his own ideas and beliefs.
