HD-Mechanical Engineering-Calculus II-Final Examination-3 May 2021-f

1. The document is a final exam for a Calculus 2 course assessing integration, vector operations, and vector calculus. It contains 6 questions assessing these topics worth a total of 100% of the exam. 2. Question 3 requires proving that the vector curl operation is equivalent to a cross product formula. Question 4 shows that the curl of a gradient of a scalar field is always zero. 3. Question 6 asks students to explain how a relationship involving vector differentiation relates to the direction of typhoons/hurricanes in the northern hemisphere versus cyclones in the southern hemisphere, and the direction of bathtub/sink vortices in each hemisphere.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Final Examination Final Exam – Estimated Completion Time: Three Lecture Hours
Calculus II Instructor: Prof.Harijono Djojodihardjo, Sc.D., IPU
Open notes (two-pages) and Lecture Notes
President University Honour System: Every student should sign the following
Statement:
Mechanical Engineering “I am working on this exam by myself without any assistance
3 May 2021 from anybody”

This signed exam questions should be submitted Student sign here

along with the student’s exam answers

1. (15%) In both rectangles, a and b are the same. Are their areas the same?
Explain

2. (15%) Carry out the following integrals as appropriate, using algebraic or

trigonometric substitution

 2 cos 2 ( 4 x ) dx =

 cos ( 3x + 7 ) dx =

3. (20%) Prove vector curl operation by following the rationale of vector cross
product as follows. Understand and follow the instruction closely.
If two vectors a and by are defined as:
b = bx i + by j + bz k and a = ax i + a y j + az k
then
i j k
b  a = ( bx i + by j + bz k )  ( ax i + a y j + az k ) = bx by bz
ax ay az
by bz bx by
= i ( by az − bz a y ) + j ( bz ax − bx az ) + k ( bx a y − by ax )
b bx
=i +j z +k
ay az az ax ax ay

Similarly, if vector differential operation curl of a vector a is defined as

curl a   a
where vectors a is defined as:
a = ax i + a y j + az k
and
    
  a   i + j + k   ( ax i + a y j + az k )
 x y z 
then complete the following derivation
i j k
       
  a =  i + j + k   ( ax i + a y j + az k ) =
 x y z  x y z
ax ay az
     
= i y z + j z x + k x y = i (... − ...) + j (... − ...) + k (... − ...)
ay az az ax ax ay

4. (15%) If:
df df df
F = f = i +j +k  i Fx + j Fy + k Fz
dx dy dz
Show that
i j k
d d d
 F = =0
dx dy dz
Fx Fy Fz

5. (20%) Find the differential quotient

4sin5 x
y=
5 x4
Using the following assumptions and quotient rule
u
y= u = 4sin 5 x v = 5 x2
v
du dv
v −u
dy
= dx dx
dx v

6. (15%) Carrying out vector differentiation appropriately, one arrives at the following
relationship:

Using the rationale of the above relationship, assuming the global atmosphere
is governed by this relationship, could you elaborate (refer to the images
below:)
a. The direction of typhoon and hurricanes in nortnher hemisphere and
cyclones in southern hemisphere

b. The direction of bathtub or sink vortex in northern and southern

hemisphere.
