Basic Aims: Section A & B
BASIC AIMS
In order to satisfy the lecturers and students’ requirements of teaching and studying
English at Viet Tri University of Industry, the lecturers of Division of Basic English,
Faculty of Foreign Languages, decided to compose Speaking skill 1 material which
is surely suitable for freshmen who major in English. The freshmen need to work on
familiar topics to get more vocabularies and help them communicate well in daily
life as well. Moreover, to meet the above requriements, we spent much time finding
out and reading many different English books, as well as took advantage of our
teaching experiences to compose this material. The contents of the material that
were designed are succinct, simple and easy to understand.
This material includes 8 units, each has 4 sections. It equips students with basic
knowledge on vocabulary, structures, speaking skills and some familiar topics in
life to provide opportunities for students to develop communication skills of
communication.
Although we tried to compose this material with our greatest efford, we could not
avoid making errors. Therefore, we would be grateful to get readers or learners’
opinions to make our material more and more complete.
STRUCTURE OF THE MATERIAL
- This material includes 8 units corresponding to 8 large topics. Each has 4 sections
A, B, C and D in which section A and section B are the sub-topics, section C is
Focus on testing, and section D is Further practice. Each unit equips students with
basic knowledge on vocabulary, structures, speaking skills and some familiar topics
in life through activities to provide opportunities for students to develop
communication skills. Each activity has been designed for practice by students
working in pairs.in groups, individually, or class activity.
- The structure of each unit comprises of the sections as follows:
Section A & B:
+ New words: Some key new words for each small topic.
+ Language function: The main stuctures or phrases for each

+ Activities: The single activities in the form of Before you speak; You
speak; and After you speak to practice from simple situations to more complex
ones.
+ Conversation: Model conversations to improve the students’ ability of
listening and practising in pairs.
+ Communication task: The integrated activities to enhance the students’
ability of communicating in different situations.
Section C: FOCUS ON TESTING
+ Provides some kinds of exams or questions often used in the middle or
final test to assist students to become more familiar with the kinds of questions.
Section D: FURTHER PRACTICE
+ Equip students with some more activities to practice at home.

COMMUNICATION TASK
Rule
The leader makes up a "bingo card," with the number of squares on the grid
corresponding directly to the number of members in the group.
Each member writes down on a separate sheet of paper a characteristic of an
interesting fact about himself.
The leader takes up all of the "Interesting facts" and compiles them on the
bingo grid that he has made.
He then passes out a bingo card to everyone and each member must fill in the
person's name that goes with each fact on the sheet.
Through mingling and talking with one another to find out who goes with

Rule
Ask and answer all personal questions about each other in pair in 5
minutes.
The pairs are separated and the other students will ask one person in pair

8D FURTHER PRACTICE
Students work in groups and they have to complete to provide the best
weekend tour of their local city to a group of international tourists.
Each student has a copy of worksheet.
Each group represents a tour company and they must decide on an itinerary
that includes all the details of the tour, such as accommodation, meals,
sightseeing, transportation, etc.
The tour group will arrive on Saturday morning at 7.am and will depart on
Sunday at 10 p.m. Each tour company has a limitless budget.
Each group has 20 minutes to plan their itineraries.
When all the groups are ready, they present their itinerary.
Students should take note their friends’ presentation and openly point out
weakness in their competitor’s itinerary.
When all the groups have had a chance to present, have A VOTE TO
