The multi-store model of memory proposes that memory has three main components: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. A study by Glanzer and Cunitz tested this model by examining the duration of short-term memory. In their experiments, they presented participants with words varying the repetitions and spacing between words. Their results found that repetitions did not impact recall rates but spacing did, with higher recall everywhere except the end of the list. This supported the idea in the multi-store model that short-term and long-term memory are independent functions.

Models of Memory SAQ Template
Task: Explain one model of memory with reference to one research study. Using the template and prompts below, map out an outline answer to the SAQ above.
Task Hints:
1. Memory/model of memory must be explained in some detail.
2. A study should be chosen which clearly addresses some aspect of the MSM. 3. There should be an explicit link between the study and the Model of Memory – in other words, it should be stated what the study teaches us about the memory.
Paragraph Content Outline of Answer
● Define Memory and the general purpose ● Memory is a func on of the brain where of the Models of Memory informa on is stored, encoded, and ● Explain Atkinson and Shiffren’s Mul retained for future use, or for the shaping Store Model of one’s personality/ideals. ● The mul -store model has three different components - sensory, short-term memory and long-term memory. ● Sensory is where memories first enter your mind. Depending on the amount of a en on, the memory can be moved to short-term or be forgo en about. A er moving into short-term, with rehearsal it can move to long term, and with frequent retrieval, the memory can stay there for the rest of the person’s life. ● Outline Glanzer and Cunitz as it relates ● G & Q outline to the Multi Store Model 1. Aim Aim: Glanzer and Cunitz were essen ally 2. Procedure interested in the dura on of short-term memory. 3. Results They had theorized that the serial posi on curve 4. Implications of results—how was produced by both short-term memory and does it support MSM? long-term memory.
Procedure: They had conducted two experiments
to test their hypothesis. First, they presented par cipants with common English words, varying the repe ons and spacing of each word , with each word being presented either once, twice or three mes in succession, and the interval between words was either three, six or nine seconds. Secondly, they gather 46 enlisted US army members to read 15 nouns aloud, and Swaraaj, Mia, Suhani, Vaishnavi
having to complete certain tasks a erward under
certain condi ons.
Results: It has been found that repe ons had no
impact on the serial posi on curve, but spacing did as recall rates were higher everywhere except the very end of the serial posi on curve
Implica ons: The results of the experiments had
supported the fact that the short-term memory and long-term memory were independent func ons. This supports the MSM.
