ART APPRECIATION
Sculpture by:
Napoleon "Billy" Veloso Abueva
ART DESCRIPTION
The sculpture is made of shiny steel, light reflected on the art piece
emphasizes the contours and lines on the figures. The gleaming surface
of the sculpture also reminds us of industrial materials, possibly an
allusion to the modern family in the industrial age. Steel, an alloy of iron
and carbon is a widely used material across many of the world's
industries.
Beyond the lines and geometric details, one can identify the
mother, the father and children leaning towards each other as families
ought to do. Napoleon Abueva was known for his use of a wide range of
media in his works. He used wood, fiberglass, cement and metals such
as bronze and steel. He was also known to incorporate industrial
elements and designs in his artworks. In an interview, the late artist
attributed his experience handling machinery as one of the factors that
empowered him to experiment with different materials in his sculptures,
one of which is steel. Interpreted abstractly, the contour of the figures
harmoniously slant toward each other, creating a unified form. Abueva’s
abstract sculpture demonstrates an active engagement with the
ambiguity of representation and testifies to his talent. His morphing
styles and techniques, which span steel, wood, metal, stone and many
other media, retain their spirit of authenticity because of the artist’s
fundamental belief that “a good piece of art transcends any period and
has perpetual value.” This artwork, Family Group in steel, is another
testament to the late artist's command of a wide range of materials. A
masterpiece which reaffirms that he, Napoleon V. Abueva, a son of
Bohol, is the "Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture.”
