This document provides an overview of pedagogy, teaching concepts, microteaching, and steps of microteaching. It defines pedagogy as both an art and a science. Teaching is established as a complex social act aimed at influencing learning. Microteaching is introduced as a teacher training technique where teachers practice specific skills by teaching short lessons to small groups with feedback. The steps of microteaching involve explaining the skill, demonstration, lesson planning, teaching with supervision, feedback, reteaching to improve, and repeating until mastery is achieved. Tutorial group options are also listed at the end.

Pedagogy, Teaching, Concepts of MT & Steps
of MT Lecture Outcomes:
Delineate and discern the pedagogies of
teaching (art & science) Establish the general concept of “teaching” in the given context Define MT Identify the Concepts of MT Establish Steps of MT Pedagogy • The art and science of teaching Art – teaching skills - can be innate talent/ inherited - learnt through practice/ knowledge acquisition Science – content based knowledge/ competency
❖ The efficacy/ effectiveness of teaching skills are
closely connected to the adeptness of content Teaching
What then is teaching?
(panel discussion) The following are some common responses to the question of defining teaching.
- Transfer of knowledge form teacher to pupils
- Facilitation of pupils by the teacher in the art of teaching - A social act of influencing pupils by the teacher - As doing anything that might lead to learning Further definitions of teaching. • … required activities of teachers whose jobs involve guidance or directions of learning of others (Bar. 1961) • …the arrangement of contingencies of reinforcement under which students learn (B.F Skinner. 1968) • …an act of interpersonal influence aimed at changing the ways in which other persons can/ will behave (N. L. Gage. 1963) Contextual delineation of teaching continued.. • From the definitions provided, it can be concluded that teaching: - is a complex activity - is imparting knowledge and skills - Involve all things that may lead to learning - Is a social act of influence
❖ From all these components of teaching, there is
no unified and specific definition of teaching and teacher effectiveness. Status of teacher training before micro teaching • No consensus on the teaching procedures in various aspects of teaching in colleges • No specific training objectives to guide student teaching • Haphazard and undiscriminating supervision of practice teaching – ill planned, ill supervised and ill assessed • Subjective feedback with respect to teacher training performance • No research support to prove its effectiveness ( box 2, pg 4 ‘Challenges of Education, A policy Perspective 1986’) ❑ Micro Teaching is a new approach in teacher education. It has become an integral component of programs garnered towards teacher training ❑ MT contributes towards competency acquisition by aspiring teachers in all aspects of teaching some of which include: - pedagogical, (art &science), - psychological - courage/ confidence mastery - oratory/ public speaking - planning/ organising - other professional skills development Concept of Micro Teaching MT is a teacher training technique which helps the teacher trainee to develop and master a specified teaching skill. It requires the teacher trainee to:
✔ teach a single concept of content
✔ use a specific/ single teaching skill ✔ teach for a short period of time ✔ teach a small group of students Consequently, the trainee practices the specified skill in terms of definable, observable, measurable, and Consequently, the trainee practices the specified skill in terms of: ▪ definable – relevant/ irrelevant ▪ observable – change from one state to another can be clearly see. ▪ measurable – the degree/ extent/ magnitude of change can be quantified/ described ▪ controllable – can be controlled/ influenced to reach the projected/ desired outcome/ result
Form/ status with repeated cycles till he attains
mastery in the use of the skill. Steps of Micro Teaching The micro teaching program involves the following steps:
I. Particular skill to be practised is explained to the
teacher trainees in terms of the purpose and components of the skill with suitable examples II. The teacher trainer gives the demonstration of the skill in micro teaching in simulated conditions to the teacher trainees (demonstrations) III. The teacher trainee plans short lesson plan on the basis of the demonstrated skill for his or her practice IV. The teacher trainee teaches the lesson to a small group of students while being supervised by a supervisor. V. Supervisor gives feedback outlining areas of strength and weaknesses. VI. Trainee teacher replans the lesson plan improving on the feedback from the supervisor VII. The revised lesson is taught to another group of students VIII. Supervisor observes re-taught lesson and gives feedback to the trainee teacher indicating the improvements and areas yet to improve. IX. The ‘teach re-teach’ cycle may be repeated several times till adequate mastery level is achieved.
