Typology: 28.02.2023, NTNU AAR4510 / AAR4605, Prof. Kerstin Höger

Typology refers to the classification of objects or buildings according to shared characteristics. In architecture, buildings can be classified by their use, form, context, density, construction techniques and other factors. Common typologies include single-family homes, row houses, urban villas, and point blocks of 3-6 stories that are more compact forms in urban areas. Typologies provide a repertoire for architectural design and help convey characteristics of place, culture and history.

28.02.2023, NTNU AAR4510 / AAR4605, Prof. Kerstin Höger

Meaning of the word “type”

Greek
Typos: model, matrix, mark, mould, figure in relief, original form

Latin
Typus: form, figure, image, kind

General
An object or artifact that belongs to a group, class, or category with certain shared characteristics
Architectural vessels, Peru, pre-Columbian, Moche and Chimu
Architectural models (Yupanas), Peru, pre-Columbian, Inka
Typology in Architecture

A group of buildings with shared characteristics, often classified according to use (e.g. housing, office,
school) or form (e.g. block, slab, tower).

The categorization according to use is limited, because it doesn’t tell much about other common
characteristics. Buildings can also change their function over time.

Hence, it is more relevant to classify buildings according to their place, climate, context (rural to urban),
density, morphology, construction technique, accessibility, circulation, and materiality - and not only by
their function.
Framework Houses, Bernd & Hilla Becher, 1959-73
Theories on Typology in Architecture and Urban Design

Our urban and rural places are a collection of different building and open space typologies.

Typologies constitute a repertoire for architecture and urban design, for example as ...

... a design method of compositions (Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand, 1802-05)

... a creative form of imitation (Quatremere de Quincy, 1825)

... building elements and techniques (Gottfried Semper, 1851)

hearth - metallurgy, ceramics,
roof - carpentry,
enclosure - textile, weaving,
mound - earthwork

... a method for standardization and industrial production (e.g. Bauhaus/ Walter Gropius)

... a philosophy of architecture and the city (Aldo Rossi 1966)

... a design theme and morphological study (Oswald Mathias Ungers 1982)
Typology as genres - design composition based on generic geometry, Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand, Précis des leçons d’architecture, Paris 1802–05
Quatremère de Quincy, Dictionnaire historique d’architecture (1825)

Theoretical definition of type as an the idea or ideal that is embodied in an element, an object or a
thing.

Building type as a product of culture, history, climate, available material, economy, craftsmanship etc.

Aldo Rossi draw’s on the definition by de Quincy in ”L’Architectura della Città” (1966)

The creation of architecture and the city is based on assembling different types formed by different
factors summed up as culture, economy and climate.

Type as the “very idea” or essence of architecture”. Studying types is studying architecture and the city.

“The study of architecture is the study of types – that means typology!”
