SCH 401 Sem 1 2022 2023 Course Outline
5-3
COURSE PURPOSE
To introduce students to fundamentals of electrochemical processes and their applications.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
Explain the theory of electrochemical reactions and electrochemical cells
Describe the working of different types of electrodes
Calculate transference numbers for a given ion
Discuss the electrochemical cells as energy producers
Describe the various applications of electrochemical cells as material producers
COURSE CONTENT
Electrolytes.
Electrochemical reactions, electrons and mass transfer interplay of both;
Faradaic and Non-Faradaic processes, electrolysis, electrochemical cell as a material producer
for example copper, sodium hydroxide; electrocatalysis, electroplating, electrowinning,
electrosynthesis of copper (I) oxide, organic electrosynthesis (hydrodiminerisation of acrylonitrile
to adiponitrile);
corrosion and its protection. Electrochemical cells as energy producers: Battery characteristics,
voltage, current, capacity, evaluation of battery performance: Present battery systems; fuel cells
like phosphoric acid, alkaline, molten carbonate, the solid electrolyte. Electrochemical
equilibrium and the Nernst equation, reversibility and solubility products, half cells, liquid
junctions and concentration cells, polarization and polarizability of an electrode, conductivity of
electrolyte solutions, superconductivity, transference number, Reference electrodes, ion
selective electrodes, glass, solid state membranes, heterogeneous membranes: Polarography
and anodic stripping voltammetry, portable and on line devices, electrochemical biosensors
(dissolved oxygen sensors).
Experimental Work:
Practical experiment will emphasize on the conductivity of electrolyte solutions, calculation of
transference numbers e.t.c.
