MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ECONOMICS STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Economics is generally seen as that discipline which studies how individuals allocate their scarce
resources to actualize many economic goals of man. This is why it is defined as the study of how
societies satisfy their many material wants and needs with few available resources. Better
understanding of economic theories such as Demand and Supply, Consumption of Goods and Services,
Inflation and Recession, is vital to people and countries saddled with responsibilities for making
decisions about resources. Understanding all these and other principles, is the beginning of my love for
further studies in Economics.

I got the knowledge of Economics as a field of study from my father, who taught Economics at a High
School here in Nigeria. The manner at which my father illustrated Economics theories and principles
motivated me into developing a great passion for Economics. It is very obvious that Economics as a field
of study is said to be a social science subject but I also see it as a blood-wire of any nation. At the macro
level , show me a nation that’s not built under economics principles and I will show you a nation that’s
dead from the outset. What blood does to a human body can also be equated with what Economics
does in the life of nations in the world.

During my days in High School, I see Economics as that which is an integral part of me. With my
performances at that level of study, it was done on me that I will do better in life choosing a career in
Economics. Immediately I rounded off my study at the High School, I got admission to study economics
at undergraduate level. During this period , I did not find it difficult to adapt to the discipline. While
other new students were struggling to get themselves acquainted with Economics principles I was
already doing exploits. My inputs in the class made me a worthy student to my lecturers and my fellow
students. My performance at graduation is still a point of reference in my school till date.

After my undergraduate programme, I had an opportunity to work in the office of Accountant-General

of my State, precisely in the department of budget reconciliation. This period of practice opened
another page in me, mostly on the real applications of both the quantitative and analytical nature of
economics. I obtained the practical knowledge of processes involved in budgeting and how it controls
both the political and economic future of a country/state. This experience also increased my passion for
further studies in Economics. Of a truth, I told myself that after my undergraduate degree, that I will
suspend further studies due to socio-economic uncertainties but my experience in the office of the
Accountant-General elevated my desire for immediate further studies, especially in a more economic
advanced country like the United States. This is why this noble move of application submission to
Central Michigan University is made with a firm conviction that it will be granted.

I vividly know that having a privilege to undergo a Masters programme in Economics at Central Michigan
University, will grant me an ample opportunity to prepare for a successful and challenging career as an
economist. The much I have heard about the department of Economics at Central Michigan University,
spurred me into great admiration for the school. The goals of the School in developing quantitative and
analytical skills of their students which will serve them well in their careers and personal lives, are added
rare opportunities every student of Economics is earnestly yearning for.

Also, obtaining Masters admission at Central Michigan University will help me acquire diverse
knowledge in Economics and prepare me for further studies at the international scale.
Thank you.

Sanyaolu Oluwakemi Mariam.
