Curriculum Project Part II
Music Department Description
In my program, students will begin band in 6th grade. This is for accessibility reasons. Not
everyone will be able to afford an instrument in elementary school and not everyone will be able
to stay after school for a pull-out program. I want to have realistic expectations for my students,
so I want them to be able to participate in band as part of their daily schedule, not as an
extracurricular. I also want the parents to know exactly what to expect out of my band program.
This includes time commitment, instrument costs, concerts, events, field trips, and more. I am
intending on having a parent orientation meeting at the beginning of the school year where I give
the parents a full calendar of the year’s activities. This would be more difficult to organize in
elementary school. Maybe further into my career if I’m at a school for a long time I would start a
pull-out program, but at the beginning of my career I want to stick to starting instruction in 6th
grade.
