Bitumen

This document describes a test to quantify the amount of bitumen extracted from bituminous paving mixtures. The test involves using a solvent like benzene and gasoline to extract the bitumen from a sample, which is then dried, weighed, and calculated as a percentage of the original sample weight. Key steps include preparing and weighing the sample, extracting it in a centrifuge with solvent, filtering and drying extracted material, and determining the bitumen content through calculations based on weight differences.

Quantitative Extraction of bitumen

from bituminous “Asphalt” paving

mixtures

The purpose

This test is used to determine the bitumen in Hot-Mixed paving mixture HMA
for specification acceptance, Service Evaluation, and researches

Apparatuses

- Oven
- Flat pan
- Balance (accuracy of 0.01%)
- Hot plate
- Graduated Cylinder (capacity 1000 – 3000 ml)
- Ignition dish
- Brush
- Desiccator
- Extraction device (bowel, filter, …. etc.)
Materials and Solvents

1- Bituminous mixture
2- Solvent
a- Carbon Tetrachloride (CLL4)
b- Ammonium Carbonate (NH4)2CO3
c- White sprite …. etc.

Due to not availability of the above solvents. A solvent is used in this test
with combination of Benzene and Gasoline with ratio (2 Benzene:1 Gasoline)

Sample preparation

- Take the sample from the site

(one sample every 500m)
- Place the sample into a large
flat pan and heat it to 110±5° C
until it can be mixed
- Split or quarter the sample into
four equal portions.

Test procedure

- Dry the bowel and weigh it (W1)

- Place about 650-2500 gm of test portion into bowel then weigh the
bowel with test portion (W2), then put it on the extraction apparatus
- Cover the test portion in the bowel with solvent and allow sufficient
time for the solvent to disintegrate the test portion (not over one
hour)
- Take the filter and dry it in oven 110±5° C and weigh it (W3) then fit
it around the edge of the bowel.

- Start the test with centrifuge revolving slowly and gradually increase to a
maximum 3600 r/min.
- Then weigh the filter as it contains some of aggregate (W4)
- Dry the bowel with aggregate after test and weigh it (W6)
- Use about 200ml of solvent for three times until it gets the light straw color
- Collect the extracted and washings solvent after test and measure the
volume (Vt)
- Dry the ignition dish and weight to 0.001g (W8).
- Agitate the extract thoroughly and immediately measure approximately 50
to 100 ml into the ignition dish (V1).
- Put the ignition dish with extract on hot plate or oven and evaporate. Then
put into oven at 500 – 600 C until become red.
- Then weigh the ignition dish with aggregate to the nearest 0.001 g (W9).
