TAIWAN
Taiwan is a country eager to get its hands
on the F-35. It is a small country (13,974
sq miles) and has very few diplomatic
ties with other countries. Many other
countries do not want to upset China by
connecting with it, including the US.
China has talked up its intentions
recently to reunite with Taiwan, even if that
means doing so by force. Taiwan would
probably have no problem financing the
F-35 as such. However, there is doubt
that they could successfully prevent
an invasion and it could be too late for
allies to react. If a Chinese invasion was
successful, the technology would fall
into the hands of the Chinese and so it
is unlikely that the US will risk providing
Taiwan with the F-35. Under the Trump
administration, Taiwan was permitted to
acquire the Lockheed Martin F-16V.

Commander of the RNLAF, he said: “We are super happy with

developing into such a useful and interoperable machine, and more
importantly how we are growing to be a fifth-generation air force.”

addition of an advanced digital beam-
forming capability, which can precisely
assess and neutralize enemy emitters.
CARRIERS IN BALANCE
Much like the CVWs that embark on them,
the US Navy’s aircraft carrier fleet is also
going through a transitional change.
This process marked a key milestone
at the end of 2022, with the maiden
deployment of the first-in-class USS Gerald
R Ford (CVN-78) to Europe, which – with
CVW-8 embarked – completed the first
stage of a two-phase event on November
26. Having departed Naval Station Norfolk
on October 4, the carrier and its strike
group focused largely on air defense,
anti-submarine warfare and distributed
maritime operations, while working
alongside European allies and conducting
a transfer of authority with NATO. Following
a brief pause, the vessel is set to return to
sea for a further four to five months in the
near future.
The next carrier in this class to enter
Navy service will be USS John F Kennedy
(CVN-79), which is now just months away
from emerging from the Huntington
Ingalls Industries shipyard in Newport
News, Virginia, after incurring a delay to her
fleet delivery following a mandate by the
US Congress that she be able to operate
the F-35C from the outset. Ford will not
be able to operate the fifth-generation
fighter until she undergoes a major
maintenance period some years from now,
as the ship’s development timescales were
understandably not in parity with those of
the Lightning II.
End of an era
As the lead ship of her class, USS Nimitz
(CVN-68) has been the backbone of the
Navy’s carrier fleet since the mid-1990s
and is now approaching the end of her
50-year projected service life in 2025,
with sister-ship, USS Dwight D Eisenhower,
following close behind in 2027. With the
third Ford-class carrier, the future USS
Enterprise (CVN-80), not due for delivery
until 2028 – as well as the incorporation of
some risk-bearing technologies that were
not previously fitted to her two sisters –
the Navy is concerned that a shortfall in
operational carriers could occur.
By law, the Navy has to maintain a force
of “no less than” 11 carriers – a temporary
reduction was allowed between the
retirement of the previous USS Enterprise
(CVN-65) in December 2012 and the much-
delayed delivery of Ford in May 2017.
In recent years, Naval Sea Systems
Command (NAVSEA) has studied options
for applying a service life extension (SLE)
program of modifications and upgrades to
the older Nimitz-class ships, with a view to
providing one complete 36-month cycle
of the Optimized Fleet Response Plan (one
extra work-up cycle and major deployment
beyond the 50-year lifespan). While being
one class of ship, each hull is different
