What this documentation is for

1.1.2 Safety regulations

GRAZIANO machine tool commissioning and use instructions are provided by

the GRAZIANO Service to ensure efficiency and safety from the first start-up.

GRAZIANO S.r.l. implements state of the art technology and experience,

nevertheless the machine must not be used by personel without adequate
training, specialist experience and maturity.
The machine must only be used for the purpose for which it was built.
GRAZIANO lathes comply with safety regulations. Care is however needed
because imprudence and inexperience can cause:
• Dangers for human safety
• Dangers for the machine and the user's property
• Dangers effecting the quality and efficiency of work.
• Follow the most up-to-date safety rules and all the precautions required by
experience and techniques during transportation, installation and
commissioning, specifically:
• All the currently enforced accident prevention regulations required for the
type of intervention and job.
• Regulations concerning electrical connections to the mains.
• Regulations concerning use in force in the country where the machine is
used.
• Technical regulations concerning hydraulic and pressurised parts.

Doku-Nr.: CTX Beta 1250TC-PU-V3.0-en page 1-9

What this documentation is for

1.1.3 Linear motors

The machine is equpped with linear motors. All safety standards must be
strictly observed due to the presence of the strong permanent magnets mount-
ed on the synchronous linear motor secondary parts.

Strong magnetic fields and ferromagnetic forces may cause a direct hazard to
human health (due to rapid motor movement and high thrust forces).

According to current medical knowledge, magnetic fields of intensity less than

5 mT present no hazard to human health.
Already at a distance of ca. 100 mm the density of the magnetic field
generated by the secondary elements is less than 5 mT (for 150 mm=> ca. 0.5
mT).
Since the density of the magentic flux from the synchronous motors is given
exclusively by the secondary parts, its value is independent of motor opera-
tion, meaning that even with the machine master switch off the above hazards
still subsist.

Due to the strong magnetic attraction, particular caution must be exercised in

the immediate vicinity (distance < 50 mm) of secondary parts.
Hand-held heavy objects (> 1 kg) or flat objects (> 1 dm2 ) in steel or iron must
not be brought into these magnetic fields.

Since magnetic force is invisible, it is often underestimated. Magnetic attrac-

tion starts suddenly at a short distance and can increase to several hundred
kg force in the case of medium sized objects.

Persons wearing pacemakers are forbidden from carrying out maintenacne

works, and must pay extreme attention to stay clear of the synchronous linear
motors. It is also necessary to keep watches, magnetic supports (e.g. credit
cards, floppy disks) and metal tools away from the motors(< 100 mm).

Installation and maintenance operations must be carried out exclusively by

suitably trained and qualified personnel.

2.3 Preparations by Customer

The final customer shall prepare the machine installation site with:
• Foundations.
• Mains connections.
• Position or move the machine to the installation site.
• Clean and de-grease the machine.
• The required lubricating oils and oil-based coolant are to be kept on hand.

The machine must be started for the first time (levelling and function test) by
personnel authorised by the Manufacturer.

Doku-Nr.: CTX Beta 1250TC-PU-V3.0-en page 1-13

Preparations

2.3.1 Foundation properties

In order to work in accordance with the intended purposes, the machine must
be permanently level and horizontal..

For this reason ensure that the foundations are sufficiently rigid with a flatness
of ± 2 mm.

Ensure that the complete installation surface area (including the periphery
units) has a flatness of ± 2 mm.

The machine requires a full length reinforced concrete floor or a machine foun-
dation of at least 300 mm.
Ensure that there is no expansion joint in the foundations beneath the machine
bed. When using a bar feeding unit ensure that the foundations are one piece
(without expansion joint).

Have the foundation size determined in accordance with the ground properties
by a structural engineer in accordance with DIN 4024, part 1. Refer to the enc-
losed foundation and loading diagrams for the foundation minimum dimensi-
ons..

The pressure resistance of the foundation concrete (minimum concrete

strength class B25 - 25 N/mm2 as per DIN 1045) must be at least 8.3 N/mm2
with reinforced concrete and 7.0 N/mm2 for non-reinforced concrete..

The machine (and peripheral equipment) must be doweled to the foundations..

page 1-14 Doku-Nr.: CTX Beta 1250TC-PU-V3.0-en

Preparations

2.3.2 Environmental protection measures

Install the machine in accordance with the individual local environmental pro-
tection measures.
Take this into consideration when planning the foundations.

Position the machine in an oil bath, otherwise ensure that the foundations are
oil tight.

When designing the oil bath ensure that free space is provided for exchanging
or dismantling the chip conveyor.

2.3.3 Important notes to consider for foundation design

The dimensions given in this manual are only valid for machines with standard
equipment.
If other devices are used (e.g. bar supply devices), ask the manufacturer for
their technical specifications, preparatory procedures and electrical connec-
tion before delivery.

Provide escape routes and safety areas according to local laws, directives and
regulations.

The machine is usually delivered by a lorry with overall height of 4m.

Electrical part

3 Electrical part

3.1 Connecting the machine to the mains

3.1.1 Protective measures

Due to their functional principle, modern digital equipment with power recovery
generates dispersion current to ground, mainly of a capacitance or pulse type.
This is not a symptom of electrical malfunction but nevertheless could cause
cut-out switches to trip.
If automatic circuit breakers are fitted for additional protection, it is recom-
mended that type B switches for continuous current be used. They should be
set no lower than 300 mA on a variable time scale.

Machine environmental conditions

4 Machine environmental conditions

Consider the following aspects when making foundations:

• The site must be vibration free.
• The site allows an even temperature and is not subject to side heat sources
such as sun rays or undergo cold air drafts.
• The site is protected from noise generated by electric installations.
• Air humidity shall not exceed 75%.
• Air temperature shall be kept as constant as possible between +15° and
+35°C (308°K).
• The altitude of installation shall not be higher than 1000 metres above sea
level.

If the machine is installed in a room where one of the following values is

exceeded, or there are particular operating conditions: e.g.:
• installation in environments where dust and corrosive particulars are
released into the atmosphere
• Installation in areas with explosion hazard or explosive substances.
Contact your DMG dealer.

4.1 Hydraulics

Use only clean oil (purity at least 25 µm)

Doku-Nr.: CTX Beta 1250TC-PU-V3.0-en page 1-37

Machine environmental conditions

4.2 Disposal of chippings

A chip collector carriage is required for collecting chippings from the chip con-
veyor.
This must be designed such that it is impossible to insert hands between the
carriage itself and the chip expulsion outlet.

The chip collector carriage should have a system for refilling coolant in the chip
conveyor.
In addition to safeguarding the environment, this reduces coolant costs.

4.3 Pneumatic part

Certain parts of the machine function with pneumatic systems. These must be
connected to a central compressed air plant with air filtering system.
Use of unfiltered air may cause incorrect operation and damage the machine
in time.
The air connection must be made with a line capable of maintaining a pressure
of ca. 6 bar.

Materials for starting

5 Materials for starting

5.1 Fluids

Fluid designations and lubrication point markings used in this manual comply
with DIN 51 502 standards. Using suitable fluids is crucial for safe operation
and long life of the machine.
The machine is usually supplied without fluids.
The fluids originally used to fill the machine (see sheet) should always be used
thereafter.
If this is not possible, use other products indicated in the attached table.
It is a good idea to use the same brand for all fluids in order to avoid obtaining
an incompatible mixture.

5.1.1 Some useful advice

The machine will only work with these types of fluids.

Fluid manufacturers provide a technical service, which gives information and
advice on the use of their products.

Doku-Nr.: CTX Beta 1250TC-PU-V3.0-en page 1-39

Materials for starting

5.1.2 Handling lubricants and oil-based coolants

Due to the substances contained (additives) these materials are a potential

health and environmental hazard.
The choice and use are the full responsibility of the owner. Instructions for use
must be supplied by the Manufacturer, to regulate the handling of these
substances, and they are to contain:
• Definition of the substances
• Indication of human and environment risks
• Protection measures and rules for handling, for example.
• Wear strong protective shoes
• Keep away from skin and eyes
• Do not inhale the vapours and aerosol
• Do not smoke while handling fluids and oils
When using the lathe, lubricant vapours may escape into the atmosphere.

For extractors, Graziano offers oil spray separators.

For oil based coolants having an oil percentage of 15% or more, or if
inflammable oil-based coolants are used in a sealed working environment that
is closed on all sides, a fire and explosion hazard exists.
For the precautionary measures to be taken, contact the Manufacturer.

page 1-40 Doku-Nr.: CTX Beta 1250TC-PU-V3.0-en

Materials for starting

5.1.3 Suggestions for waste fluid disposal

The fluids used for machine operation are pollutants and once exhausted must
not be disposed of in the environment.
It is a good rule to provide for their ecological disposal, e.g. by contacting a col-
lection centre before machine installation.

Materials for starting

Ask the fluid manufacturer or representative about product compatibility.

• (1) Grease for clamping units. Follow the Manufacturer’s instructions.
• (2) Always keep to the mixing ratios indicated by the Manufacturer:
• Too much: the machine guides and parts oxidise
• Too thick: poor cooling action
• (3) Use a permanent fluid for sealed cooling circuits, preferably in ready-to-
use packs. If this is not possible, dilute 25 / 30% concentrated fluid with wa-
ter. (never go below 25%).
