Assignement Applied Biostat

This document provides instructions for an applied biostatistics assignment involving analysis of multiple datasets using statistical tests at the 5% significance level. Students are asked to: [1] Analyze a heart disease dataset to compare blood pressure and examine relationships between various variables; [2] Perform an ANOVA on experimental temperature data to determine the effect of different drug doses; [3] Conduct an ANOVA on treatment outcomes data from different groups of people; [4] Fit a multiple linear regression model and test hypotheses using child growth data; [5] Fit a logistic regression model and interpret findings from a study on blood pressure variation in pregnant women.

Applied biostatics individual assignment for veterinary
epidemiology, microbiology and public health students (regular)
For all tests, use a 5% level of significance. DUE DATE May 15,
2021
1. Use the heart dataset heart.xlsx and answer the following questions.
a) Compare average blood pressure among women without diabetes. Test at 5% level
of significance.
b) Is there a statistically significant association between smoking status and treatment?
c) Is there a statistically significant association between BMI and BP? Also, comment
on the strength and direction of the association.
d) Does the treatment affect BP significantly?
e) Do smoking and drinking affect BMI significantly?
2. The following data represent the outcome of an experiment (temperature in degree
Fahrenheit) with two different dose types of medicines (types A and B), and third type is
a placebo (C) administered randomly to patients with high fever.
A B C
100.2 101.5 102.3
101.3 100.3 103.1
100.4 99.8 102.3
102.5 102.3 102.4
101.5 101.5
102.7
a. Write a suitable model that describes the variation in temperature attributable to
three different dose types of medicine. What are the assumptions?
b. Perform the analysis of data and display the analysis of variance table.
c. Perform an appropriate test to determine whether there is variation in body
temperature due to three dose types of medicines.

3. The following data show outcomes of a study on seven different treatments applied to
four different groups (blocks) of people. The outcomes, on a scale from 0 to 100, are
displayed below:
Group Treatment
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Group 1 75 77 68 69 93 74 43
Group 2 83 73 78 57 79 65 71
Group 3 87 78 78 63 86 75 64
Group 4 81 77 69 79 82 70 55

a. Write the appropriate analysis of variance model and indicate the underlying
assumptions.
b. Find the treatment sum of squares, block sum of squares, and error sum of
squares.
c. How can you test the equality of treatment means? What is the test statistic?
Comment on the findings of the treatments from the study.
d. How can you test the equality of block means? What is the test statistic? What is
your comment?
e. Interpret your overall findings.
4. Consider the following data on height (in cm), age (in months) and weight (in kg) of 25

By takin weight as a response variable, answer the following questions

i. Draw the scatter diagram. What indications does the scatter diagram reveal? Calculate
Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r).
ii. Fit a multiple linear regression
iii. Interpret the coefficients
iv. Test for the overall regression hypothesis: H0: β1= β2=0
v. Find R2 and interpret

5. The purpose of a study by Halligan et al. (A-28) was to evaluate diurnal variation in
blood pressure (BP) in women who were normotensive and those with pre-eclampsia.
The subjects were similar in age, weight, and mean duration of gestation (35 weeks). The
researchers collected the following BP readings. As part of their analysis, they studied the
relationship between mean day and night measurements and day/night differences for
both diastolic and systolic BP in each group.

a. Fit logistic regression model and interpret the finding
